🌸 October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month! 🌸

Many people living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) also experience a condition called dysautonomia.

👉 Dysautonomia (also called autonomic dysfunction) affects the autonomic nervous system - the part of the body that controls things like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation.

For those with EDS or HSD, the most common types are forms of orthostatic intolerance - symptoms that happen when standing or being upright:
1️⃣ Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) – low blood pressure when upright
2️⃣ Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) – rapid increase in heart rate when standing without a blood pressure drop

💡 Common symptoms can include:
• Fast heart rate or palpitations
• Lightheadedness or fainting
• Brain fog + trouble concentrating
• Headaches, chest pain & shakiness
• Fatigue & exercise intolerance
• Cold hands/feet or swelling in legs
• Nausea, GI issues & bladder changes
• Sleep disturbance & temperature dysregulation

✨ Dysautonomia can look very different from person to person - but awareness helps people get the right diagnosis and support.

October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month!

Many people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) also have a type of dysautonomia. There are different types of dysautonomia with different symptoms.

Dysautonomia, also called autonomic dysfunction, is a group of disorders that affect the autonomic nervous system.

People with EDS and HSD most commonly have a form of orthostatic intolerance. “Orthostasis” means to stand upright, so orthostatic intolerance refers to symptoms that occur due to standing up or being upright.

The two most common types of orthostatic intolerance are:

1️⃣ Orthostatic hypotension (OH) — low blood pressure on being upright.
2️⃣ Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) — an abnormal increase in heart rate when standing without a drop in blood pressure.

Symptoms of dysautonomia include:

● Tachycardia (fast heart rate)
● Palpitations (feeling the heart racing or pounding)
● Hypotension (low blood pressure)
● Lightheadedness
● Presyncope (a sense of being about to faint)
● Syncope (fainting)
● Blurred vision
😶‍🌫️Brain fog (problems with concentration and memory)
● Headaches
● Chest pain
● Shakiness
💤Chronic fatigue
● Exercise intolerance and feeling worse after exercise
● Swelling and/or discoloration of the legs after standing for short periods of time
● Cold, discolored hands and feet
● Temperature dysregulation
🥵Sweating
● Sleep disturbance
● Gastrointestinal issues
● Nausea
🚽Bladder dysfunction

🤔 Why is Remedial Massage Sometimes Painful? 🤔
If you’ve ever wondered why a remedial massage can feel a little uncomfortable or like straight-up torture at times, here’s the answer 👉

💢 Pain or tightness in your muscles often means there are “knots", active trigger points or restricted areas.

💆‍♀️ A remedial massage therapist uses targeted pressure to break down, improve relaxation, circulation, and restore movement.

✅ While it can feel intense during the treatment, the long-term result is reduced pain, better mobility, and a body that functions more freely.

However having said that, a common myth is that for remedial massage to “work,” it has to hurt. Not true!

💆‍♀️ Effective doesn’t mean painful.
Discomfort can happen if your therapist is working on very tight or restricted muscles, but treatment should never feel unbearable.
If your body is bracing or resisting, the muscles can’t fully release, which makes the massage less effective.

At Inline Physio Moorooka, our highly experienced Remedial Massage Therapist Leena Prasad works with you to make sure the treatment is both effective and safe, adjusting techniques to your comfort level while still achieving results.

📅 Book your massage today and discover the difference!

🚨 Achilles pain? Here’s the latest rehab research! 🦶✨

A fresh study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine by Lauren Pringels et al (2025) found that exercises that avoid deep ankle bending (low compression) had better outcomes than the usual “drop‑off‑the‑step” moves (high compression) for insertional Achilles tendinopathy. "Insertional" Achilles tendinopathy means pain and swelling where the Achilles joins the back of the heel bone.

What they did:
🔹 6‑month program, 42 adults.

🔹 Same strength plan, but one group kept their heel raises from a horizontal starting position (low squeeze) while the other dropped their heels over a step (high squeeze).

Results:
⚡️ Low‑compression crew doubled their pain‑to‑function improvement.
💪 8 in 10 felt “much better” vs only half in the high‑compression group.
🔥 Fewer flare‑ups along the way.

Take‑away:
1. If the back of your heel hurts where the tendon meets the bone, talk to a physio about how best to start loading your Achilles with a low-compression rehab plan.

2. Start heel‑raise exercises on flat ground and add a slight heel lift - skip the big drop‑offs until things settle.
