Happy Mothers’ Day!
On Sunday, 26 May, I'm taking part in Brisbane Memory Walk & Jog to raise funds to support Australian's impacted by dementia. This is a cause close to my heart and I would love your support. In 2017 my mum was diagnosed with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s at 55 years old. It has been a heartbreaking journey watching someone you love slowly disappear and have the grief drawn out over years. My Mum is currently in a facility receiving the care she needs. All money I raise will support the work of Dementia Australia and help provide vital support services like counselling, support groups, education, and research to help find a cure.

Please make a donation to support my efforts and help us reach our goal to beat dementia.

“Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a large group of illnesses which cause a progressive decline in a person’s functioning. It is a broad term used to describe a loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning. There are many types of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body disease. Dementia can happen to anybody, but it is more common after the age of 65.”

Myth: Dementia is a normal part of ageing.

In fact, dementia is NOT a natural part of getting older.

As we age, our brains change, but dementia is not an inevitable part of that.

It can affect both young (younger onset dementia) and older people (those over 65). Dementia can impact a person's thinking, memory, and behaviour.

If you are concerned about changes in your thinking, we are here for you. Call our National Dementia Helpline anytime on 1800 100 500. The Helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You might also like to check out our BrainTrack app. It is free and helps you monitor and understand changes in cognition over time, which you can use to start a conversation with your GP. For more information about BrainTrack, check out our website: www.dementia.org.au/braintrack-app

Myth: Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are the same thing.

Fact: Alzheimer's disease is just one type of dementia. In fact, there are more than 100 diseases that may cause dementia.

Dementia is not one specific disease, rather, it's an umbrella term for a set of symptoms caused by physical disorders affecting the brain.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are often confused because Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.

There are many other types of dementia including Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia and lots more.

For more information about types of dementia visit our website: https://www.dementia.org.au/about-dementia/types-dementia

Or call the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500. The National Dementia Helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
