Sciatic pain or just back pain?
Most people treat these the same - and that’s why it keeps coming back 👀

👉 Pain shooting into the glute, hamstring or foot = nerve referral (sciatic)
👉 Pain staying local in the lower back = joint / muscle driven

Back pain or hip pain?
Your movement pattern usually tells us more than scans. 👇

If your pain changes with movement, here’s what it often points to ⬇️

🌿 Pain bending forward
→ Most commonly sciatica / disc-related
What to expect:
• Pain into the buttock or leg
• Worse in the morning
• Pain putting shoes or socks on
• Sitting can aggravate it

👉 Extra tip: Don’t completely rest sciatica.
Short, regular walks (every ~20 minutes) help calm the nerve and reduce stiffness.

🌿 Pain bending backward (arching)
→ Often mechanical lower back pain
What to expect:
• Local low back pain
• Stiffness with standing or walking
• Rarely sharp leg pain

🌿 Pain with hip rotation
→ More likely hip-driven
• Older adults: think hip arthritis
• Younger / active: think FAI or labral irritation

What to expect:
• Groin or deep hip pain
• Pain getting in/out of the car
• Pain with walking, standing, or sport-specific movements

Is it actually sciatica - or just back pain?

True sciatica follows a very specific pattern.

✔️If your pain travels from your back into your buttock and down the leg, that’s the key sign.👈

👉 Pain bending forward?
👉 Worse in the morning?

💡Bending matters because it increases tension on the sciatic nerve.
💡And morning pain happens because prolonged stillness overnight can heighten nerve sensitivity.

Here’s the part most people get wrong 👇
The worst thing you can do with sciatica is total rest.

Prolonged sitting and repeated bending can agitate the nerve further.😥

✔️Move every 20minutes
✔️Limit bending over - it compresses the nerve leading to further agitation.
