Bone Stress Injuries 🦴

Early Assessment Matters!
Bone stress injuries (BSIs) don’t happen overnight — they develop when bone load exceeds the bone’s ability to adapt and recover. Left unchecked, a mild stress reaction can progress to a stress fracture, often leading to prolonged time off sport or work. 😭

What does the evidence tell us?
Research shows BSIs are multifactorial, not just a “training error.” Common contributing factors include:
• Sudden changes in training load or intensity
• Inadequate recovery or sleep
• Low energy availability / poor nutrition
• Hormonal factors
• Reduced bone density
• Biomechanical loading patterns and strength deficits
This means simply “resting” isn’t enough.

The key warning signs 🚨 🚩
Bone stress injuries often present as:
• Localised pain that worsens with activity
• Pain that settles with rest (early stages)
• Tenderness directly over the bone
• Pain that gradually appears earlier in training sessions
Ignoring these signs and “pushing through” is one of the biggest reasons BSIs worsen.
