Chronic kidney disease often develops silently, but daily habits can significantly reduce your risk. Prevention starts long before symptoms appear.

Here are 8 simple rules to protect your kidney health:

Rule 1 & 2:
• Exercise at least 30 minutes daily
• Reduce salt intake (5–6g/day) and choose fresh foods

Rule 3 & 4:
• Monitor blood sugar levels
• Check blood pressure regularly (around 120/80 is ideal for many adults)

Rule 5, 6 & 7:
• Stay well hydrated (around 2L daily unless advised otherwise)
• Quit smoking
• Avoid overusing NSAIDs like ibuprofen

Rule 8:
• Arrange regular kidney function tests if you have diabetes, hypertension, obesity or a family history

Your kidneys also play a key role in heart health, which makes routine GP reviews even more important.
