A farewell as natural as Tasmania itself.
At Alluvium, we use water — not flame — to return your loved one gently to the earth. It’s a process as peaceful as a misty morning in the Huon or the waves lapping a quiet beach on the East Coast.

Locally owned. Environmentally kind.
Water cremation, right here in Tasmania. 💧

It's been twelve months, today, since we were able to open our doors and invite Tasmanian families to bring us into their worlds; those invitations started from only a couple of days after we opened, and haven't stopped or slowed since.

To those families who invited us into their grief, and their unknowing, and their uncertainty, and asked us to walk alongside them. You know who you are, and so do we. Always.

Thank you.

And from Brendan and I, to the partners and small people who have been behind us, holding us, supporting us, and believing that we could manage this all. Always.

Thank you.

To the rest of you, we'll be here when you need us. Always.

It's been an absolute privilege.

We spent 6 hours filming, and all we got to show for it was this not-quite-5min mini-documentary (which is pretty great, all the same).

If you find it's raised more questions than it's answered for you, don't hesitate to reach out. We're always happy to discuss all things death, dying, and final disposition with you!

It’s called water cremation, and it’s changing the way we think about death. It uses 90% less energy than fire, creates no smoke, and families say it feels m...

It’s difficult to know how to speak about this, so like we always do, we’ll just speak openly and transparently. Be aware this post is about miscarriage and infant loss, so if today isn’t the day for thinking about that, please feel okay with scrolling past.

We’ve spoken about how proud we are of the gentle nature of water cremation, and there is nothing that demonstrates this more than when we are supporting families and their fragile, precious loved ones. For many who experience miscarriage or infant loss, it can be hard to grieve due to the nature of the processes available up until now leaving little, if any, ashes for a family to hold and remember.

For those little lives gone far too soon, Alluvium Water Cremations are honoured to be able to support you with a gentle, dignified, and transparent choice to bring your little one home and remember them in a way that makes sense to you.

Speak to either Brendan or Luke if you’d like more details about this process, and please don’t hesitate to let those you love know about this beautiful option for our little people in such a shatteringly difficult time.

It was a real honour to speak with so many curious, thoughtful, and generous people yesterday at North West Ecofest Tasmania. We will be back today to chat, although due to the prospective weather and our own lack of foresight in bringing shelter, you'll now find us in The Stadium. Look forward to hearing from you all, along with answering any of the questions that may have percolated overnight!

03/04/2025

Luke will be speaking at North West Ecofest this weekend (10am on Saturday), if you'd like to come along and hear a bit about what is emerging in the end-of-life space in Australia that's worth being excited about!

Alternatively, you might just come along and see the rest of what looks to be a wild, wonderful, and creative weekend!

We're excited to share the first of our Transparency Tours for 2025. There will be more of these, in conjunction with some other fascinating and informative (but as yet unannounced) events throughout the year.

It looks like some of you have found your way to the event page already, and even grabbed tickets. If you haven't yet and you're thinking about it, don't hesitate. The space itself has some limitations, and there is likely to be a waitlist.

Please consider sharing or inviting anyone who may be interested. Becoming literate about this part of our lives can be challenging, but it's so important and helpful. We're honoured to have the chance to share this journey with you.

Thanks to everyone that tracked us down and spoke with us at Sustainable Living Tasmania's Big Day of Circular Living Ideas on Saturday. It was amazing to see so many people come through the event, and it was great to hear about all the different things that are happening to help reduce and minimise the impact we're having on our great state.

We also got to meet Costa Georgiadis Official which was an amazing experience in itself!

I’m Luke, one of the founders of Alluvium Water Cremations.

With the best part of a decade’s experience in the death space, I’ve spent years immersed in reading and thinking about the practices, rituals, and philosophies surrounding death and dying. From my earliest days as a mortician to co-founding Tasmania’s first water cremation service, I’ve been driven by a deep commitment to providing compassionate, sustainable, and meaningful end-of-life care.

For me, death care is about more than just logistics—it’s about creating space for reflection, connection, and honouring life in all its complexity. I’m passionate about helping people navigate these choices around death we are lucky enough to make, with care and understanding.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me reading, thinking, writing, and exploring Tasmania’s lesser-known natural wonders with my wife Kylie and daughter Remy—hidden trails, quiet underground spaces, and any place that feels forgotten or abandoned. I also love anything to do with playing cards, whether that's creating unusual moments that feel like magic, or simply playing a game with close friends.

I believe that how we approach death can tell us so much about how we live. If you’d like to learn more about water cremation or share ideas about reimagining end-of-life care, I’d love to connect.
