One of the goals I set for 2025 was to make sure I took the time to watch a minimum of 1 naturopathic webinar per week. (I actually pay a small subscription fee for this benefit and was wasting the opportunity due to poor time management!)
It is difficult to admit that when I often get the time, I tend to waste it scrolling mindlessly through social media 😖
My time is far more valuable, and this morning, as I arrive to work early, with coffee in hand, I'm watching my 1st webinar for 2025 in order to maintain my skills and stay up to date with research and changes in natural medicine for my wonderful clients 🤩
I don't put much stock in New Year Resolutions. However, I do think it's an excellent time to revisit your goals - big and small. Each goal you reach is a win, and each one that you don't is a learning opportunity 💚

How heavy is your head? ⚖️

I'm putting my myotherapy hat on today, driving to work this morning I noticed most kids I passed that were walking to school had there head on a 45° angle looking at their phones!
This is a chart depicting the stress and weight put on the neck and spine as a result of hunching over a smartphone and handheld devices at varying degrees. A fullgrown head weighs 5 kg in the neutral position. As the head bends forward, the weight seen by the neck increases to 18 kg at 30° and 27 kg at 60°.

It is estimated that children and adolescents spend a medium of 5 to 7 h a day on their smartphones and handheld devices with their heads flexed forward to read and text. It has been reported that the cumulative effects of this exposure reach alarming results of an excess stress on the cervical spine area, ranging from an average of 1825 to 2555 h a year.
These patterns can result in postural changes, headaches, disc compression, muscle strain and long term structural issues.
Scary isn't it!

Some things you can do to help:
⏳️ Monitor device time
🧘‍♀️ Take regular breaks
🏋‍♀️ Exercise and stretch
🖥 Have an ergonomic workplace set up
👐 See a myotherapist for advice and treatment

What do you drink 1st thing in the morning? Is lemon water best? Or apple cider vinegar? Let's compare the benefits 🫶

Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water:

💧 Hydration: Provides hydration, which is essential after a night of sleep when the body may be slightly dehydrated.

🍋 Vitamin C: Rich in vitamin C, which supports the immune system, promotes collagen production for healthy skin, and acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from damage.

⚖️ Alkalizing Properties: Alkalizing effect on the body once metabolized. Believe to help balance the body's pH levels.

🍏 Digestive Health: Potential to aid digestion. The acidity of lemon juice may stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can help with digestion.

🥗 Weight Management: Some claim that the pectin fiber found in lemons may help curb hunger cravings, potentially aiding in weight management.

🌞 Refreshing Flavor: Lemon water offers a refreshing and pleasant taste, which can be a motivating factor for individuals to drink more water and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Benefits of Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV):

🩸 Blood Sugar Regulation: Studies suggest that apple cider vinegar may improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those aiming to manage their blood sugar levels.

⚖️ Weight Loss: There is some evidence to suggest that consuming apple cider vinegar may promote feelings of fullness, leading to reduced calorie intake and potential weight loss over time.

🍏 Improved Digestion: Like lemon water, apple cider vinegar may aid digestion by increasing stomach acid production, which can enhance the breakdown of food and nutrient absorption.

🦠 Antimicrobial Properties: Contains acetic acid, which exhibits antimicrobial properties and may help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut.

❤️‍🔥 Potential Heart Health Benefits: Some animal studies have indicated that apple cider vinegar may lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, though more research is needed.

🌿 Detoxification: The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar supports the body's natural detox processes.

We all feel stressed at times but it's important to recognise that regular stress can impact your health 🙏
Let's talk cortisol.
What does it mean when it's ⬆️

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. While it plays a crucial role in the body's fight-or-flight response, chronic high levels of cortisol can have various negative effects on health.
Here are 5️⃣ things that can be affected by elevated cortisol levels:

Immune System Function: High cortisol levels can suppress the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can contribute to a weakened immune response 🤧

Weight Gain and Metabolism: Cortisol is associated with the regulation of metabolism and can influence appetite and fat storage. Elevated cortisol levels over an extended period may contribute to increased abdominal fat and weight gain ⚖️

Mood and Mental Health: Cortisol can impact neurotransmitter levels in the brain, and prolonged elevation may be linked to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. It can also affect memory and cognitive function 😩

Blood Sugar Levels: Cortisol plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels. High cortisol can lead to increased glucose production, potentially contributing to insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels. Over time, this may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes 🍬

Bone Density: Chronic exposure to high levels of cortisol may interfere with bone formation and decrease bone density. This can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures 🦴

It's important to note that cortisol is a vital hormone with essential functions in the body, and short-term elevation is a normal part of the stress response. However, chronic stress and consistently high cortisol levels can contribute to health issues over time.

Summer Garden is coming along nicely 😎
First year of growing cucumbers vertically, which seems to be working well. We will have a lot of ripe tomatoes in the next few weeks, so it will be salads on top of salads in our house 🥗🍅
Our lime tree overheard me threatening to pull it out if we went another year without fruit, so our soda water and coronas should be well flavoured this summer 🍻
Despite our poor netting efforts, our plums have survived the birds so far and look to be growing a huge crop for us to binge on 🍑
Thanks to the recent rain, our tanks are full to the brim and ready to support our plants through the hot days still to come
