Call for volunteers: Bays History Project

Help us bring The Bays’ history to life! We’re creating a historical timeline in the main corridor to celebrate the community effort behind the hospital - from its early days as The Bush Nursing Hospital to today.

We’re engaging a professional historian to lead the project, and we need volunteers to support them by:
- Collecting old photos, documents, and artefacts
- Assisting with research

This is a 2-year project leading up to our 90th birthday in 2027, that will kick off in early 2026.

If you love history, community, or storytelling, we’d love your help! When you email your expression of interest (EOI), please include any relevant experience or areas of expertise.

📧 Email your EOI to: volunteer@thebays.com.au

Preserve our past, celebrate our community, and be part of something lasting!

Merry Christmas from all of us at The Bays! 🎄

Our festive cheer wouldn’t be complete without a huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers – here they are spreading smiles behind our Santa and elf cut-outs!

That’s a wrap for 2025! Thanks to our incredible community, we raised $546,593, cared for thousands of people, and welcomed 526 babies into the world. 💙

Your support came in so many ways:
⦁ 673 members of our growing Bays family
⦁ 328 participants in health & wellbeing events
⦁ 70 volunteers giving 7,388 hours of service

This Christmas, help us Light the Way ✨ Our goal is to raise $100,000 for neonatal phototherapy lights, bili blankets, and essential theatre equipment – making a real difference for patients of all ages.

✨ The most popular baby names at The Bays for 2025 ✨

Did your little one’s name make the top 5? 👶💛

This year, we were honoured to welcome more than 500 babies to families across the Mornington Peninsula and surrounding communities.

To all our maternity families, thank you for choosing to have your baby with us.

We wish all The Bays babies and families - past, present and future - a safe, joyful and healthy festive season. 🎄

✨ A double dose of coincidence at The Bays ✨

Best friends, same street…and same birthday! 🎉💛

On 9 December, Kirstel Makepeace and Mikaila Pridham both welcomed their second baby boys at The Bays – completely unplanned, arriving early, and neither mum knew the other was in the hospital! 👶🏻👶🏼

Their eldest sons, Mack and Rome, were born just weeks apart. Now Bobbi John Makepeace and Tate Pridham have followed in their big brothers’ footsteps – and, like their mums, share the same birthday. 🎂

More amazing coincidences:
- Both mums share the same birthday – 7 February
- Both married to electricians ⚡
- Same obstetricians for all their births – Dr Sarah Roberts for their firstborns & Dr Natalie Elphinstone for their secondborns

Life’s sweetest moments really do come in pairs. 💛

Congratulations, Kirstel and Mikaila! 🎉

Pingiaro family legacy of care at The Bays 💛

For the Pingiaro family, The Bays has never been just a hospital – it’s been part of their story for nearly 100 years. From the birth of Sylvia Fyffe in 1927 near where The Bays now stands, to generations born, treated, and cared for here, the family’s connection runs deep.

“Our family’s connection runs deep,” shares Deputy Mayor Paul Pingiaro. “It’s continuity, pride, and a responsibility to keep supporting the hospital and our community. Through it all, we’ve been close to home and surrounded by people who truly care.”

Moments that shape a family:
👶 Cherished memories of the births of Paul’s children, knowing they were welcomed in the same hospital that cared for generations of their family.
💛 Comfort during difficult times, like his wife’s cancer treatment – where even small gestures made a big difference.

This year, the Pingiaro legacy will be honoured on The Bays Giving Tree, recognising nearly a century of devotion to the hospital and community.

✨ Introducing The Bays Wig Library ✨

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our new Wig Library at The Bays Cancer Care Centre Wellness Centre on 8 December! 💖

Thanks to the dedication of our amazing volunteers, Dee and Wendy, this space will offer patients comfort, confidence, and support through every stage of their cancer treatment journey.

Both women were inspired to be part of this program after losing their own sisters to breast cancer, Dee almost 20 years ago and Wendy more recently. When Wendy's daughter Leah who also works at The Bays suggested she get involved, she jumped at the chance and saw this as a way to honour her sister Judy’s memory by supporting others with warmth, empathy, and understanding.

Dee and Wendy have completed specialised training with CelebrityBrandz Wigs to bring this vision to life, and will guide you through a wide range of wigs and headwear.

💇‍♀️ What to expect:
⦁ Private 1:1 wig sessions (between 10am-2pm by appointment)
⦁ A wide range of wigs and headwear to explore
⦁ Friendly, relaxed, and confidential support
⦁ Tea, coffee, and often a laugh along the way!
⦁ Bring a friend, family member, or support person

Every session is free of charge and designed to create a calm, welcoming space where you can take a breath and focus on yourself. 🌸

Dee and Wendy’s generosity and personal experience help honour their sisters’ memories while bringing comfort, dignity, and connection to our patients.

📩 To book a session or for more info, email executive@thebays.com.au or call 03 5976 5275.

Let’s celebrate this beautiful new chapter of care together! 💕
