Flexible flatfoot is most common in young children and is characterized by an arch that disappears when the child stands up (so the feet appear flat) but reappears when sitting. The condition usually occurs in both feet. Most children do not experience any symptoms from the condition, but those who do may feel pain or cramping in the feet or legs while walking. In most cases, children outgrow the disorder without treatment by the age of 5. If your child does experience symptoms, they can usually be alleviated by wearing supportive shoes and custom-made shoe orthotics for arch support.

While cracked heels might appear to be more of a cosmetic problem, left unchecked and untreated, they can cause pain and risk becoming infected. During the winter months, our skin is drier and therefore needs more moisture. Apply a foot cream or heel balm on a regular basis during the winter months.

Keep your feet consistently warm .... When the temperature drops, your feet are not immune. Ensure when at home you are insulating your feet through good quality, natural fibre socks and at least some form of warm footwear – even fluffy slippers. Apply a moisturiser from the heels to toes in a circular motion – this helps keep them warm but also helps keep the skin healthy!

Retronychia is generally caused by some form of trauma affecting the proximal section of the toenail. Due to the trauma with retronychia you often get a new nail growing underneath the old nail and this pushes the old nail up into the proximal nail fold, causing redness and inflammation. Because of the trauma the underlying nail matrix is often damaged so a new nail does not grow out. Hence a tell tale sign of retronychia is when the nail is not growing. Antibiotics will help settle any associated infection but it will not fix the problem as it is not addressing the cause. To successfully treat retronychia you may need to have the damaged toenail removed.

Foot numbness can cause big problems for people with diabetes. Complications of diabetes include poor circulation and poor sensation that can lead to serious skin ulcers. All people with diabetes should have their feet checked at least once a year by a doctor or podiatrist. This is important to detect problems early and to prevent ulcers and other complications.

Fun Fact .... Ticklish Feet is a good sign! .... With almost 8,000 nerves, it’s no wonder that feet win the award for “Most Ticklish Body Part.” But don’t lament the tickles–having ticklish feet means that all those nerves are firing correctly. Feet that don’t respond to a soft tickle could indicate a problem like neuropathy, or damage to the nerves and tissue of the foot.

Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury that is common especially to joggers and jumpers due to the repetitive action. Achilles tendonitis may be felt as a burning pain at the beginning of activity, which gets less during activity and then worsens following activity. The tendon may feel stiff first thing in the morning or at the beginning of exercise. The severity of your tendon injury, your compliance with treatment and the workload that you need to return to, will ultimately determine how long your injury takes to successfully rehabilitate.

Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium, which is needed to build and maintain healthy bones and keep our muscles strong. It may be cold outside, but you can still catch some rays. Take the long way to work, go for a short walk after lunch, or rug up and play outside with your kids. Spending 15 to 30 minutes outdoors three times a week is all you need. If it's too chilly outside, try moving your desk so you can sit by a window, eat vitamin D rich foods and take a supplement if necessary.

When should you see a podiatrist? ... You may be experiencing pain in your feet, ingrown or discoloured skin/nails, corns, skin rashes, foot odour, foot injuries, broader health problems such as diabetes or arthritis, recurrent tripping or falling, problems fitting comfortably in your regular shoes; or if you notice swelling, lumps, or redness on your feet or legs. It is a common misconception that painful feet are a normal side effect from everyday activities. Research shows that only a fraction of individuals suffering from sore feet seek out professional advice. Just as you would visit your dentist for a toothache, you should visit a podiatrist if you suffer from painful or tired feet and/or lower limbs.

Mirrors of Health ... The condition of our feet often provides early indications of conditions such as diabetes, arthritis or circulatory disease. For this reason the human foot is sometimes called the "mirror of health". Look out for warning signs such as dry skin, brittle nails, burning and tingling sensations, feelings of cold, numbness, and discoloration. Seek the opinion of your podiatrist when any of these problems occur.
