Mornington Coastal Medical Centre (formally Mt Martha Surgery and then Benton’s Square Medical Centre) began over 30 years ago with the original doctor operating on his own from his beachside residence.
As the town changed from a quiet seaside resort to a suburb with a large influx of permanent residents, Mt Martha Surgery evolved as well to meet the changing needs of the community.
More doctors joined and the practice was instrumental in bringing to the area services such as physiotherapy, podiatry, pathology, counselling, massage therapy, dieticians and alternative medicine as the local community rightly expected to have access to comprehensive health care.
The original doctor’s house was changed many times to accommodate the greater number of doctors and services but in 2002 we realised that the house could no longer meet the doctors’, staffs’ and community’s requirements.
Housing development on the land side of Nepean Highway had been at the second largest growth rate in Victoria. No medical practice had operated in this area.
In October 2002, as an extension of our philosophy to change with the evolving needs of the community, with much work but excitement, we relocated to Benton’s Square to place ourselves in the heart of a new population.
With so much new housing, we cared for many young families as well as providing care to our established patients, many of whom have been with us for over 30 years.
From caring for mainly holiday makers, the practice now served an established suburban community with a broad spectrum of ages and industries.
In 2005 in accordance with our new area of practice we changed our name to “Benton’s Square Medical Centre”.
After 10 years at Benton’s Square it became apparent that once more our facilities there could no longer fulfil our needs and those of our practice population. Unable to expand or develop new services within the Benton’s Square complex we decided to relocate once more.
In October 2012 we moved into our purpose built facility at 958 Nepean Highway Mornington and named ourselves Mornington Coastal Medical Centre. We have more consulting and treatment rooms and better patient facilities including parking.
In 2013 we became a training practice for new GP’s to enhance the quality of our medical service.
Additionally, in 2016, the new premise expanded to incorporate a dispensary, further consulting rooms and future facilities for specialists and allied health.
The end result is now one of the largest private medical facilities in the region.
