Babies and children have higher risks of complications from the flu. Some children may be unable to attend childcare or preschool for two weeks or more, whilst every year in Australia, hundreds of children become so unwell from the flu that they need to be treated in the hospital. Most of them are babies and children under 5 years of age.

Protecting your baby against influenza starts when you're pregnant.

For every pregnancy and at any stage of pregnancy, it is safe and recommended for women to get a flu shot yearly. Changes to immune, heart and lung function during pregnancy can increase vulnerability to flu-related complications.

Getting vaccinated during pregnancy is also the best way to protect your newborn. By getting the flu vaccine, you pass on the protective antibodies through the placenta which protects them in their first few months of life, when they are most vulnerable and too young to have the influenza vaccine.

Myth: "I had the vaccine and still got the flu, so it doesn't work"

Fact: Severe flu viruses are circulating all the time, which is why people may still get the flu despite being vaccinated. However, being vaccinated can improve your chance of being protected from the flu. This is especially important to stop the virus affecting people with vulnerable immune systems.

The flu is a virus that can infect your nose, throat and sometimes your lungs. Symptoms include:
Fever (high temperature)
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)

The virus spreads easily through coughing, sneezing and close contact, and can start suddenly and may last for a week or more.

Ask your GP about ways to protect yourself from the flu.
