Are you experiencing shoulder pain? It could be coming from the main muscle group of the shoulder, known as the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff plays a major role in both shoulder strength and stability. It’s made up of 4 muscles, which help to perform actions such as lifting and rotating the arm, and keeping your shoulder joint secure in the socket.

Injuries to the rotator cuff include tears, tendinopathies, and impingement, which can result in pain and movement limitations to the shoulder, neck, upper back and arm.

The good news is, an accurate diagnosis and management plan will often help improve symptoms and het you back doing the things you love! To learn more about the different types of injuries that can impact the rotator cuff and how osteopathy can help, follow the link in our bio to read the full blog post.

Did you know 1 in 5 women experience gluteal tendinopathy?

Gluteal tendinopathy is a common condition that may occur due to overuse, muscle weakness, changes in activity level, or degeneration associated with aging.

It can cause hip and buttock pain, which may be aggravated while walking, climbing stairs, or laying on the impacted side. Your osteopath can assist in managing this condition through a combination of hands-on treatment, rehabilitation exercises, and lifestyle advice.

Is your child experiencing back pain? One of the most common causes of low back pain in athletic children is due to bone stress injuries. Bone stress injuries occur due to too much load being placed on a bone, to the point that it cannot cope, resulting in a stress reaction, and sometimes fracture.

Risk factors for bone stress injuries, include:
• Extension based sports (where you bend backwards), such as gymnastics, tennis, cricket, and rowing, and,
• Sudden increases in training load, such as overlap of sporting seasons (such as when cricket is finishing up and footy training has started).

The most common way that lumbar bone stress injuries present is persistent one sided lower back pain during or after physical activity.

The best course of action for managing pediatric low back pain is early intervention. Management will often include a period of rest to reduce the load on the spine, as well as hands on treatment and a gentle rehabilitation program. If you want to learn more about bone stress injuries, see our blog post or book an appointment via our website or by calling the clinic on 5977 0466.

Do you think that you have been experiencing sciatic pain?

Sciatic pain, also known as sciatica- occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the low back into the legs, becomes irritated or impinged- causing pain in the low back, buttocks and down the back of the legs. The pain may be sharp, shooting, or burning in sensation, and at times have numbness or pins and needles associated with it.

Sciatica is often used to label any pain in the low back that radiates to the legs, however this is not always the case, and the source of pain may come from various structures, not necessarily the sciatic nerve. To find out more about sciatic pain, other causes of back pain, and what to do about it- head over to our website to read the full blog post.

Osteopaths and Diagnostic Imaging:

As Osteopaths we are primary health care practitioners, which means that you do not require a referral from a GP to make an appointment with us. Furthermore, in certain situations, we also have the ability to refer you for diagnostic imaging such as x-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, or CT scans.

Whether or not you are referred for diagnostic imaging will depend on the onset of your pain, duration, and whether the information obtained will be important in formulating your diagnosis or potentially change your treatment and/ or management. Situations where you may be referred for imaging include when a fracture may be suspected, if there’s a lack of progress over a prolonged period, or if you are experiencing worsening neurological symptoms.

When referred for an x-ray of the spine or pelvis by an osteopath, you will receive a full Medicare rebate, while other regions of the body (such as the wrist or ankles) have a reduced rebate.
Osteopaths may also refer you for other imaging modalities such as ultrasounds or MRIs, however these do not receive any rebate so you may be referred to your GP first to allow you to receive a rebate.

If your osteopath refers you for diagnostic imaging, they will explain their reasoning behind why this is important, and follow up your results with you once they are received. Depending on your results, your osteopath will then work with you and any other required health professionals to assist you in recovering from your injury.

If you have previously had any scans done, feel free to bring them along to your appointment so that your osteopath can assist you in understanding the findings and they can factor this information into your treatment plan.

What do we treat as osteopaths?

While many people may think that osteopaths just treat bones (due to the name), we treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders. Some conditions that we commonly treat here at Bayside osteo include back pain, headaches, tennis elbow, pregnancy related aches and pains, gluteal tendinopathy, ankle sprains, muscle tears, rotator cuff injuries, rib sprains, postural pain, bursitis, nerve pain, carpal tunnel, arthritis, and more!

While every osteopathic treatment is tailored to your individual needs, common techniques we use include soft tissue massage, articulation, dry needling, muscle energy techniques, and manipulation.

While it may feel like your osteopath is asking you a lot of questions during the appointment, this is important as it allows us to see the bigger picture and understand what may be contributing to your pain. Understanding this allows us to address what may be preventing you from recovering and also allows us to know your goals and develop a treatment plan to get you back to doing the things that you love.

During your appointment, your osteopath will take the time to explain what your diagnosis is, how they can help manage it, and provide you with lifestyle advice, rehabilitation exercises, and a treatment plan to move forward appropriately. In some cases where further information or assistance is required, you may be referred to other practitioners such as a GP, podiatrist, or specialist who will work with your osteopath to give you the best care and outcome possible.
