This week, we’re celebrating the people who give so much of themselves to support others.

Our volunteers are part of the heart of Peninsula Home Hospice — offering their time, their kindness, their skills and their care in so many different ways.

To every volunteer who supports Peninsula Home Hospice — this week and always — thank you.

Your generosity makes a real difference in the lives of our clients, carers, families and wider community. 💙

For Ellen, Peninsula Home Hospice volunteers weren’t just people who visited.

They got to know Ian. They found common ground. They built trust. And in doing so, they gave Ellen something deeply needed during an incredibly difficult time — support, connection, and a few precious hours to breathe.

This Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who quietly show up, listen, connect, and make families feel less alone.

During some of the hardest months of Ellen’s life, Peninsula Home Hospice volunteers became something she deeply looked forward to.

As she cared for her husband Ian at home through cancer, Alzheimer’s and COVID, the emotional weight was enormous.

But when volunteers Albert and Scott arrived, they brought more than practical support. They brought connection, companionship and a few precious hours to breathe.

For Ian, it meant time with people who took the time to know him.

For Ellen, it meant feeling less alone.

This Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who quietly show up, build trust, and bring comfort when families need it most.

To open National Volunteer Week, we’re sharing Ellen’s story.

Ellen first met Peninsula Home Hospice volunteers while caring for her husband Ian. In a time that was exhausting, emotional and deeply isolating, their support made an unforgettable difference.

“The volunteers that came into my house…they rescued us.”

Today, Ellen is a volunteer herself, using her own experience to support other local families through one of life’s hardest chapters.

All week, we’ve been exploring one question:

What do people misunderstand about palliative care?

This is what our team had to say — real answers, from people who are part of it every day 🧡

15/05/2026

We asked our team to describe palliative care in one word.

Different words…but all speaking to the same thing 🧡

This Palliative Care Week, we’re continuing the conversation around what palliative care really means.

What do people misunderstand about palliative care?

Let’s clear this up.

It’s about living well — with the support you choose, around you.

Not just the final days.

But everything leading up to them…
and the people alongside them 🧡

Ever noticed what happens when you work together for a while?
You start turning up in an unofficial uniform 😊

Meet four beautiful members of our Allied Health Team.

Our Counsellor Case Workers work alongside clients and our nursing team to deliver holistic, Specialist Palliative Care. Through one-to-one support and education, they help make it possible for people to stay at home for their care — where around 70% of Australians say they would prefer to be. Peninsula Home Hospice ensures people are supported, heard and cared for in a way that reflects their values and choices.
