Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It is characterised by sclerosis a Greek word meaning scars. These scars occur within the central nervous system and depending on where they develop, manifest into various symptoms.

MS affects over 25,600 in Australia and more than two million diagnosed worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men.

There is currently no known cure for MS however through treatment approaches such as changes in exercise and diet can help manage symptoms and slow progression of the disease.

WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?

Chronic pain (also known as persistent pain) is pain that persists beyond the expected healing time of an injury. Unlike acute pain
which is caused by tissue damage, chronic pain or persistent pain is less about the structural or tissue damage and more about the
sensitivity of the nervous system and ‘non tissue related factors’.

Significant research has shown that exercise is an essential aspect in the treatment of chronic pain. Often when we experience
chronic pain we avoid activity in an attempt to not cause pain fl are ups. However we know that gradually over time people
experiencing chronic pain become less able to complete activities which were previously enjoy.

One in five Australians is living with chronic pain. By 2050, it's estimated that over 5 million Aussies will experience chronic pain.

BUT WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT PAIN, ITS CAUSES AND TREATMENT IS CHANGING!

This week is National Pain Week, and exercise is proven to be beneficial for a range of chronic pain conditions, including neck and back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and migraines.

Exercising not only increases your strength and range of movement, it also provides anti-inflammatory effects, releases "feel good" chemicals, reduces the sensitivity of your nervous system, and improves your sleep quality and mood.

For more information about pain, what causes it and how you can use exercise as a form of treatment, read the blog post below. You can also contact one of our Exercise Physiologists to chat further about this and how you can use utilise exercise to improve your health!

Living with persistent pain can be extremely frustrating. Our understanding of pain is evolving, and so too is the way we approach treating pain.

MENS HEALTH WEEK 2021!

EXERCISING TO IMPROVE MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Currently on average, seven out of every nine su***des each day in Australia are men.

This tragic statistic can be attributed to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety which increase a man’s risk of self harm or su***de. The current statistics in Australia show that one in eight men will experience depression, and one in five will experience anxiety at some stage in their lives.

For more information on the importance of physical activity on men's health, click on the link below.

Exercise has been shown to be a helpful tool in alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression, in addition to other mental health conditions among men.

Making sense of disabling back pain!

“Do you have back pain? You’re not alone. Back pain is the leading cause of disability and can affect many aspects of a person’s life. The problem is there are so many myths and misconceptions about back pain. Unfortunately, much of the current care for back pain is expensive, risky and in the end, often ineffective. Back pain is complex and the facts about it are rarely understood. Best care for back pain involves a journey with several key steps.”

Leader within the field, Prof Peter O’Sullivan will be hosting a lecture on Wednesday 15 September between 7.00 – 8:30pm (AEST) where he will be making sense of back pain, busts common myths, and provides some practical information about how you can become more effective at managing your back pain. Peter will explore all of the above through a person’s lived experience of disabling back pain.

If you or anyone you know has persistent back pain, I would highly recommend registering to watch this free event!

You can also take some time to look through Musculoskeletal Australia for further fantastic resources and information about back pain and other MSK conditions.

This free online lecture will help you make sense of back pain, bust common myths, and provide some practical information about how you can manage your back pain.

This month, our Exercise Physiologist Nicholle will be taking part in The Push-Up Challenge; completing 3,318 push-ups in 25 days to help raise awareness of mental health. These 3,318 push-ups represent the number of Australians who died by su***de in 2019.

The push-up target changes each day to reflect a vital mental health statistic.

Today the 1st of June marks Day 1 – 130 push-ups!

More than 1/10 Australians will consider ending their life: Over a lifetime, around 13% of Australians between the ages of 16-85 will seriously consider su***de. 4% of people will make a plan, and just over 3% will make an attempt.

Even though it can be tough, the evidence suggests that asking someone about whether they are experiencing suicidality, including plans or attempts, does not increase the likelihood of them completing su***de. Asking your friends and loved ones about what is going on for them can identify those at risk and increase the chances that the person gets help.

You can get some advice on how to have a conversation about su***de here:
