You must keep the mind fixed on one object, like an unbroken stream of oil. The ordinary man's mind is scattered on different objects, and at the time of meditation, too, the mind is at first apt to wander. But let any desire whatever arise in the mind, you must sit calmly and watch what sort of ideas are coming. By continuing to watch in that way, the mind becomes calm and there are no more thought-waves in it. These waves represent the thought-activity of the mind. Those things that you have previously thought deeply, have transformed themselves into a subconscious current, and therefore these come up in the mind in meditation. The rise of these waves, or thoughts, during meditation is an evidence that your mind is tending towards concentration. Sometimes the mind is concentrated on a set of ideas - this is called meditation with Vikalpa or oscillation. But when the mind becomes almost free from all activities, it melts in the inner Self, which is the essence of infinite Knowledge, One, and Itself Its own support. This is what is called Nirvikalpa Samadhi, free from all activities.

Do not be overwhelmed by your emotions.
A person under the control of their unregulated emotions,
Is a slave to them.

The controlled mind is a great treasure,
the philosopher's stone,
which yields whatever you want.

Most people tend to think of themselves as a physical being with a soul being attached. In actual fact, we are actually a spiritual being with a physical body that is attached. The physical body is like a vehicle and the higher self (spirit) is the driver. The spirit is immortal and it uses the vehicle to grow and learn lessons in this lifetime. Since one lifetime is not enough time to learn all the lessons that the spirit needs to learn, the spirit will discard the current vehicle (death) and acquire a new vehicle (rebirth) in order to continue learning new lessons. This is the principle of reincarnation and will continue until enlightenment is achieved.

Anger and hatred binds two souls together. When you hate someone, it creates an energy 'link' with the person. You become chained to the person and your soul becomes entangled with that person. If you want to be free, you must forgive that person.
(Eperiencing Being. The Golden Lotus Sutra on Life pg 44 by Master Choa Kok Sui)
Comment: What this means is that if you have a negative entanglement with a person and it is not resolved then both of you will reincarnate together again and go through the same grievances again until you both resolve the situation. You are better off forgiving and move on.

Those who are ready, advance very quickly and can become yogis in six months. The less developed may take several years; and anyone by faithful work and by giving up everything else and devoting himself solely to practice can reach the goal in twelve years. Bhakti [devotion] will bring you there without any of these mental gymnastics, but it is a slower way.

The whole ocean is present at the back of each wave, and all manifestations are waves, some very big, some small; yet all are the ocean in its essence, the whole ocean; but as waves each is a part. When the waves are stilled, then all is one; "a spectator without a spectacle", says Patanjali.
