After a traffic accident, it takes just 4 minutes to die from a blocked airway. Bystander first aid can make the difference between life and death.

The Learner Driver First Aid Awareness tool is a free 30-min eLearning module designed to instill lifesaving first aid skills into young drivers and their passengers.

The stroke team at The Alfred is delighted to be the first in Victoria to receive Australian Stroke Coalition Stroke Unit Certification.

The certification is achieved by meeting a set of national criteria, ensuring patients receive the best possible care.

Alfred Health Director of Stroke Services Prof Geoffrey Cloud said it was a proud moment for the team.

“This is really fantastic validation for our team... the culmination of years of hard work,” he said.

“We’re all hugely motivated to do the best for all our patients and it’s incredibly rewarding to have those efforts recognised.”

Just under 2.7 million Australians had asthma in 2020-2021 (ABS 2022). People who suffer asthma flare-ups usually have an action plan to help manage the attack, but would you know how to help somebody if they needed it?

An asthma attack can quickly become a life-threatening emergency. Signs that someone needs first aid:
- Breathing difficulty
- Difficulty speaking
- Coughing, wheezing, whistling sound
- Tightness in the chest
- Racing heart
- Inability to administer needed medications e.g. inhaler
- Symptoms continuing or worsening despite medication

Follow DRSABCD Action Plan. Call 000, ask for an ambulance and say ‘this is an asthma emergency’ and follow steps for First Aid for asthma.
