💚 Body Image & Eating Disorder Awareness Week 💚
This week, we raise awareness of eating disorders - serious mental health conditions that affect physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. They often stem from negative body image and can impact people of any age, gender, background, or body type.
Common disorders include:
• Anorexia nervosa - extreme restriction of food intake
• Bulimia nervosa - cycles of bingeing and purging
• Binge eating disorder - recurring episodes of eating large quantities of food
These are not lifestyle choices - they are complex illnesses that require professional care. Early intervention can make a life-changing difference.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Support and recovery are possible. 💬

World Men's Health Week: Empowering Healthy Lives

Australian men generally enjoy better health and longer life expectancy compared to men in most other countries worldwide. However, there are still significant areas for improvement in men's health in Australia. While some preventive health practices are well-maintained, with only 1 in 10 men smoking daily and 27% maintaining recommended physical activity levels, other health risk factors remain concerning.

Dietary habits and weight management are particular areas of concern, as less than 1 in 30 men consume sufficient fruits and vegetables, and only 1 in 4 men maintain a healthy weight1. Workplace safety is another critical issue, with men accounting for more than 9 in 10 work-related fatalities. Additionally, men in Australia face a higher risk of preventable deaths, including a su***de rate more than three times that of women.

To address these health disparities, it is crucial for Australian men to engage more actively in preventive healthcare. Regular visits to general practitioners and participation in available health screening programs, such as health checks, and bowel cancer screenings from age 50, can significantly contribute to early detection and improved health outcomes. By focusing on these preventive measures and addressing key risk factors, Australian men can work towards closing the life expectancy gap and reducing the burden of preventable diseases.
