Last year I completed the Professional Certificate in Myofascial Release which is a treatment that I now offer to clients.
What is Myofascial Release?
Firstly, fascia is connective tissue composed of collagen, elastin and polysaccharide gel complex called ground substance, which forms a three dimensional interdependent system of strength, support, elasticity and cushion. In appearance it looks like a mass of thin webbing, like spider web has been interwoven in several layers.
It allows the body to retain normal shape and maintain vital organs in correct position, determines the length and function of its muscular component, is a network of information exchange, influencing and influenced by every cell, structure and system in the body, it separates, surrounds, infuses with, supports, connects and protects and has the potential to influence every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, organ, system and cell in the body.
When we are injured, have surgery, have poor posture or are influenced by our mental health status we affect the fascia causing restrictions in the way we move, which then causes straining in other areas of the body, causing abnormal movement which then leads to pain, joint compression and an increased risk of injury or further injury.
So applying Myofascial Release, increases range of motion, decreases pressure in fascia restrictions and restores normal structure and function.
Myofascial Release happens when slow sustained pressure is applied to the restricted area/s transforming them from a solid form to a more fluid form which improves the fluidity within the ground substance, realigns fibres and breaks up restrictions in the myofascia (fascia around muscle tissues).
I may also incorporate cranial sacral release ( static unwind) and muscle energy techniques which I also learnt in the course to help achieve the best possible outcomes for my clients.
