Did you know that stress and anxiety ages you?

The beauty and personal care industry in Australia is worth a whopping $7.42 billion dollars and is expected to grow by 2.4% every year.

From facials to anti-ageing peels, fillers, and Botox. Business is booming.

The desire to stop the marching of time is one that we can probably all identify with.

With so many products being developed for helping with the condition of the appearance of the skin from the outside in, little attention is paid to slowing down the ageing process from the inside out.

When we are stressed our bodies release stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Stress hormones are helpful for short periods of time but chronically can cause unwanted inflammation in the body.

A telomere is a protein that is found at the end of each chromosome. They protect and repair the genes. Cortisol damages the telomere and makes them shorter. Shorter telomeres are associated with premature ageing. The shorter the telomere, the older the cells biological age.

Chronic stress can lead to an overload of stress hormones, resulting in harmful imbalances in the body. Excess stress hormones have also been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, weakened immune systems, and memory loss.

High amounts of cortisol have also been shown to break down the collagen and elastin in the skin accelerating the formation of wrinkles.

The good news is that learning how to manage anxiety and stress can have a huge impact on your health and reverse some of the damage done.

As a personal observation I have noticed how some of my clients begin to look younger as they learn how to change their thought processes and generate less anxiety. I jokingly refer to Strategic Hypnosis as natures Botox. The results can be staggering.

There is no doubt that advances in technology have improved our lives.

Never before have we had access to a whole world of information literally in the palm of our hands. Allowing us to answer a question in seconds and share real time accounts of our lives all over the world.

But there would seem to be a price to pay for this convenience.

Although we can connect with friends all over the world, we are often not connecting with the people in the same room as us. Technology can diminish social time and create a distraction to take actions.

Jumping from platform to platform, digesting small pieces of information either through posts or short clips have diminished our ability to focus for long periods.

Focus is a learned skill that we are losing as we hardly use it anymore.

Focus allows us to make better decisions in life which effects the quality of our life.

Not only does technology effect our social connections and our ability to focus, there also appears to be a direct link between the introduction of social media and emotional disorders. Between 2005 and 2017 the rates of depression increased 52%

Negative content is often upgraded in visibility causing the user to feel depressed and anxious.

You can take control of how you and your family and loved ones use technology to enhance your life and avoid the downsides.

Take time to connect, limited screen time around the dinner table and talk to each other about your day.

Give children games and toys that help them learn skills. Building blocks and jigsaws to name just a couple.

Read books, it may seem hard at first, aim for a goal to read one page and increase it over time.

Practice doing nothing. Do nothing for one minute. It will feel uncomfortable at first. Again the more you do the more you can do.

I know you are busy and you may be looking at these suggestions and think that you don't have time to play, chat and sit around doing nothing. But how much of a time drain is social media?

Finding a balance between the real world and the online world will help you in so many ways.

Emotions are contagious.

Have you ever had the experience of being in the presence of someone who spreads happiness and good feelings to all around them? Also, do you know someone who you avoid like the plague because of their ability to suck the joy from you?

Experiments have proved that people are strongly influenced by others feelings.

This is called the contagion of emotion.

Mental health professionals have known for a long time that people who struggle with poor mental health are more likely to have a depressed family member.

This had been assumed previously to have been caused by genes, but current research does not seem to support that conclusion. More and more the evidence is showing that the people we have around us can profoundly effect our own mental health.

Statistically, you are more than twice as likely to have depression if you have a depressed parent or family member than if you do not.

But don't despair, research also shows that people who successfully receive treatment for their own depression, through therapy interventions including family therapy, can also positively alter the outcome of the mental health of those around them.

By learning the skills needed for good mental health such as critical thinking and problem solving to name but two, can not only be life changing for the depressed individual but also for those around them.

Good mental health is contagious too. 😊

It is understandable to want to know "why"

Why do I feel like this?

Why did I do that?

Why did that happen to me?

Why, why, why going around and around.

We ask why because we have a need to understand things to feel in control.

Research suggests that people who are uncomfortable with uncertainty are the most likely to struggle with depression and anxiety. Seeking certainty can often lead us to jump to the wrong conclusion which in turn can have a negative impact on our lives.

In short, we would rather come up with a wrong answer than have no answer. We literally make up stories and then make the mistake of believing those stories. We aren’t checking them. This can be very harmful.

Unfortunately, so much of what happens in life doesn't appear to have a reason why. Not all question can be answered.

Learning how to tolerate uncertainty and being able to set aside the discomfort of not knowing clears space in your head, keeps you in the real world and allows you to make better decisions.
