The twenty-second of December
“There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.” Luke 15:11-12 NIV
God loves us so much He gives us free choice. Our Heavenly Father doesn't demand relationship with Him, it's something we have to choose. And while it grieves God's heart when we choose to turn away from Him, He won't stop us.
There is no indication that the Father tried to stop the son, or even that he tried to change his mind. Our Heavenly Father doesn't want blind obedience with us as His children. Our Lord desires a true love relationship with us. It is not love if it is forced. True love has to be freely given.
Sometimes we struggle with ‘free choice,’ particularly when we are hurt because of the free choice of others. We can ask ‘God, if you are so powerful, why didn’t you stop this from happening?’ I remember asking that question myself in a very difficult situation. God showed me that when He gives us a gift, like free choice, He doesn’t take it away from us. Even when we use that gift for the wrong things.
The more I understand the Lord’s mercy, the more I realise how amazing His mercy is. The Lord is full of love and goodness! If you have time, take a moment to just meditate on these few verses from Psalm 103:10-12: “He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us” (NKJV).
When the prodigal son returns home, his loving father celebrates with the biggest party. He does not point out his sins, he simply receives him. The brother is angry because he fails to understand the mercy of the Father. The brother feels his father is being unfair. And it’s true. God is not always fair, His mercy and grace are unfair. And as a recipient of that mercy and grace, I’m so grateful for that!
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am so grateful for Your mercy and grace that You extend so freely to each one of us. Thank you for Your unconditional love and acceptance for me. In Jesus name, Amen.
P.S. I gave the first copy of the book to Mum.
