Have your children 👦🏻 👧🏼 had a visit to the dentist 🦷 yet? It is important for children to have their first trip to the dentist at around 12 months or as their first teeth erupt. It is a great idea to have some friendly familiarisation experiences early rather than their first dental experiences is due to tooth trauma from an accident or fall.

Very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world (lockdown or not!) Our family loves being out on the bay and catching dinner is a pretty good bonus 🍽 🎣 ✅

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILDS TEETH HEALTHY 🦷 ✅
1️⃣ Brushing with a soft brush and children's fluoride tooth paste (from the age of 18 months)
2️⃣ Parents need to assist with brushing the teeth twice a day as a child's dexterity isn’t fully matured (even if they feel independent and say they can do it themselves)
3️⃣ Limiting sugar intake in foods as well as sticky foods such as honey, dried fruit and fruit straps.
4️⃣ Always drink water - no juice, cordial or soft drinks
5️⃣ Visit the dentist every 6 to 12 months

In Australia about 42% of children aged 5-10 years have dental decay.
Decay is caused from bacteria and sugar, this bacteria lives in plaque which is that white sticky stuff on the teeth. Bacteria lives in plaque which is that white sticky stuff on teeth and sugars from food and drinks. Stay tuned for our tips for keeping your child's teeth healthy which is so important!

Did you know that the Royal Children’s website www.rch.org.au is a vast and comprehensive source for information on kids oral health?
It’s hard (REALLY hard at the moment 😞) We get it!
• “I’m sick of repeating myself Kate”
• “I really tried to repeatedly ask them to stop”
• “I’ve bribed, I’ve begged... it’s not working”
That’s where I step in. Let me do what I love and know will work for you and your child. Kate X

Two years ago! Time flies 😍🥰💗💗
I was so lucky to help this gorgeous little family. Often thumb and finger sucking can be simply from mimicking others ... so true in this case - this beautiful girls does exactly as her big brother does. And just as her brother did these guys have stopped finger sucking and their parents could not be prouder.
If we can help you contact us for an appointment.

🔴 Today is RED NOSE day 🔴
Red Nose Day sparked a global movement & catalysed research into the reasons why babies die suddenly in their sleep.
And because of that, we now have six evidence-based steps all parents can take to reduce the risk of their baby dying in their sleep.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible public support for Red Nose Day.
But the fight must continue. And we still need to help.
Because more than 3,000 babies still die suddenly and unexpectedly each year in Australia. We are losing them to stillbirth, SIDS among other things.
3,000 little lives taken before they’ve had the chance to grow up – that's 9 little lives taken every single day. And 9 Australian families devastated, every single day.
I’ve put a link in my bio for donations: any little bit helps 🙏🏻

This gorgeous Miss 👸🏼 came to see me for her thumb 👍🏻sucking. As you can see her thumb has caused big changes in the position of her teeth 🦷 as well as the growth of her jaw.
Although she will need to visit the orthodontist as her adult teeth grow, right now she has been a superstar working hard with Kate and our Quit Program to stop her thumb sucking habit. So proud of you! 👊🏻

Around the age 5 - 6 sometimes earlier the first tooth becomes wobbly and their excitement of a visit from the tooth fairy is real🙌🏻🥳🧚♀️
A tooth becomes loose as the adult tooth pushes it up and out the way as it erupts in the mouth.
It is important that we stop noxious habits such as thumb 👍🏻, finger ✋🏻and dummies before the adult teeth erupt to help with jaw development and growth and space for teeth to fit.
There are 3️⃣2️⃣ permanent teeth that replace those little tiny 2️⃣0️⃣ baby teeth.

For Health & Wellbeing week I visited in on Monday on behalf of where I also work as a Dental Hygienist.
“This morning we had Kate from - Mt Eliza visit Kindergarten to tell us about dental hygiene and the dentist. 🦷 We need to brush our teeth twice a day, eat healthy foods and drink lots of water. Kate asked the children how many teeth they think they have at 5 years old. The guesses were as low as 10 to 100. All of the children got to have a go at brushing the 'model teeth' in small circle movements from back to front.
'The Smile Place' Mt Eliza has given us little gift bags with a toothbrush, toothpaste and a flossing tool for all of the children to take home.”

Thumb sucking .... looks so sweet, but it’s not always so simple.
Thumb sucking is not just about soothing or comfort - every child is different. I have learnt that the orofacial behaviours of our kids can not only effect the the development of their little faces and jaws, it can sometimes be an indicator that there may be other issues at hand.
We are proud to be the FIRST certified thumb and finger sucking clinic on the Mornington Peninsula. We help kids stop thumb and finger sucking the friendly way. We offer a fun and individualised program to empower your child to stop the habit for good.
I’m Kate from Thumbs Away and I’m here to help. I am a Dental Hygienist and an Orofacial Myologist. As a mum of two little ones I have a passion for oral health and the effects it can have on our children.
If you have tried everything or not sure where to start and need help contact us for an appointment.
