📍 Spine Series: The Sacrum & Coccyx (Tailbone Region)
We’ve made it to the foundation of your spine: the sacrum & coccyx.
✨ What are they?
• The sacrum is a triangular bone made up of 5 fused vertebrae (S1–S5), connecting the spine to the pelvis.
• The coccyx (tailbone) is 3–5 small fused bones sitting just below the sacrum.
Together, they anchor the upper body to the lower body and play a crucial role in stability and movement.
🔗 What do they connect to?
• Sacrum forms the back of the pelvis, connecting at the sacroiliac (SI) joints.
• They support:
• Pelvic alignment & stability
• Weight transfer between upper & lower body
• Posture & balance
• The coccyx provides attachment for muscles & ligaments involved in sitting, walking & pelvic floor function.
⚠️ Common Issues
• SI joint dysfunction (pain at the base of spine/pelvis)
• Tailbone pain (falls, prolonged sitting, childbirth)
• Pelvic imbalance → hip & low back discomfort
• Referred pain into groin, hips, or legs
• Pregnancy-related pelvic instability 🤰
💡 Why it matters:
The sacrum & coccyx form your structural core. Dysfunction here can impact standing, walking, and stability.
Caring for this area can:
✅ Reduce pelvic & tailbone pain
✅ Support hip & low back stability
✅ Improve posture & core strength
✅ Aid pregnancy & postpartum comfort
