We are incredibly proud to recognise the outstanding achievement of local Mount Isa man, Derrick Cusack.
Pictured here proudly representing Gidgee Healing, Derrick’s journey is one of dedication, leadership and commitment to both his family and community. It is a privilege for us to support him and to see him flying the Gidgee Healing flag on such a significant stage.
Before heading to the USA to compete in the Boston Marathon, Derrick shared a few words about his journey and purpose:
“I am Derrick Cusack — father, business owner and Kalkadoon man from Mount Isa.
I was selected into the Indigenous Marathon Program in 2021. At its core, it is a leadership program focused on building strong community leaders. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to compete across Australia and complete five full marathons (42km). This week, I’m travelling to Boston as one of four Australians selected, marking the 40th anniversary of Rob De Castella’s historic win.”
“My ‘why’ has evolved over time. When I first joined the program, I had been sober for one year and wanted to prove that your past does not define your future. Now, six years sober, my motivation is my kids and my community. I strive to be a positive role model and make decisions that benefit those around me.”
“Our health is our life — mentally, physically and emotionally. I’m excited to work alongside Gidgee Healing to promote a healthy way of life.”
