Is My Drinking Still OK?

A lot of people ask themselves this question, often quietly, often more than once.

Maybe you’ve noticed you're drinking more than you used to. Or you’ve tried to cut back but found it harder than expected. Maybe it’s become a way to cope with stress, sleep, or difficult feelings. Whatever the reason, if it’s starting to worry you, that’s something worth listening to.

You don’t need to hit “rock bottom” to ask for help. In fact, the earlier you reach out, the easier it can be to make a change. Working with a psychologist can help you understand what’s driving the habit and give you tools to feel more in control again. We can also support you if you're already trying to stop or cut back and just need a bit of extra help staying on track.

There’s no judgment, no pressure, just a chance to talk honestly and find what works for you. We’re here when you’re ready.

Dementia or Depression? Understanding the Difference

Have you noticed an elderly loved one becoming more withdrawn, forgetful, or struggling with day-to-day tasks? It can be challenging to distinguish between depression and the early signs of dementia, as both conditions often present similarly in older adults.

Depression can mimic dementia, causing memory problems, confusion, and reduced motivation. Dementia, however, involves a progressive decline in cognitive abilities beyond typical mood-related issues.

A neuropsychological assessment can make all the difference by clearly distinguishing between these two conditions. Accurate diagnosis means appropriate and timely treatment, significantly improving quality of life for both individuals and their families.

At On Track our experienced neuropsychologists provide compassionate and thorough assessments, guiding families towards the best possible outcomes.

Feeling Lonely? You’re Not Alone

Loneliness is an experience that doesn’t discriminate: it can arise whether you’re surrounded by people or by yourself. In Australia, loneliness is more common than many realize. Recent studies suggest up to one in four Australians regularly experience feeling isolated or disconnected.

Who Experiences Loneliness the Most?
Young Adults: Whether transitioning from school to university or entering the workforce, big life changes can spark a sense of isolation.

Older Adults: Retirement, bereavement, and living alone can make older individuals especially vulnerable to loneliness.

People in Remote Areas: Physical distance from services and support networks can exacerbate feelings of isolation.

New Parents: Adjusting to life with a newborn, while joyous, can also feel overwhelmingly lonely, especially if you lack a strong support system.

Why We Feel Lonely
Humans are wired for connection. When our emotional or social needs aren’t met, loneliness can take hold. Over time, it can impact our mental and physical health, contributing to issues such as stress, anxiety, and even lower immunity.

Ways to Cope and Connect
Acknowledge How You Feel: Recognizing and naming loneliness is a vital first step.

Seek Out Community: Join a local club or an online group that shares your interests—small interactions can build up to genuine connections.

Prioritize Self-Care: Engage in activities that nourish your body and mind, from healthy sleep routines to mindfulness practices.

Reach Out for Help: Professional support offers a safe space to unpack underlying reasons for loneliness and develop strategies to nurture meaningful relationships.

We’re Here to Help
If loneliness has been weighing on you, we provides a warm, confidential environment to explore your feelings and find effective ways to connect. You don’t have to face loneliness alone! Together, we can work toward a healthier, more connected life.

Feeling stuck or overwhelmed? Remember that even the tiniest steps can create a ripple effect for positive change. At On Track Psychology, we believe that personal growth starts with manageable, practical actions you can take every day. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Set a Daily Check-In: Take a few moments each morning or evening to notice your emotions. Ask yourself, “How am I feeling right now?” This simple practice fosters self-awareness and helps you address concerns before they grow.

Practice Mini Mindfulness: Engage in brief mindfulness breaks throughout your day, like taking three slow, deep breaths or maybe savouring the taste of your favourite tea without distractions. These short pauses can ground you in the present moment.

Celebrate Small Wins: Did you cross a task off your to-do list or learn something new? Recognize and honour these achievements, no matter how small. Positive self-talk and self-acknowledgment can help build self-esteem and motivation.

Reach Out When You Need Support: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to connect with friends, family, or a professional therapist. Sometimes, an empathetic ear is all it takes to lighten the load.

By taking small, consistent steps toward self-care, you’ll gradually build a stronger, more resilient mindset. If you’re ready to explore deeper strategies or need one-on-one support, On Track Psychology is here to help guide you on your path to well-being.

The start of a new year feels like a blank page—a chance to set intentions and move closer to the life we want. But resolutions can be tricky! They can motivate and inspire, or they can leave us feeling stuck and overwhelmed. Here are some ideas to make the most of your goals this year:

Why Resolutions Can Be Powerful
✨ Fresh Start Energy: There’s something motivating about a new year—it’s like hitting the reset button, giving yourself permission to try again.
✨ Meaningful Progress: When your new goals align with your values, what matters most, like health, family, or personal growth, they can feel more purposeful and are easier to stick with.
✨ Celebrate the Small Wins: A sense of progress builds momentum. Even tiny changes, like a five-minute walk or drinking more water, can lead to big results over time. Notice and appreciate all the things you accomplish!

Why Resolutions Can Backfire
⚠️ The All-or-Nothing Trap: Skipping one workout or indulging in a treat doesn’t mean you’ve failed. No-one's progress is perfect! It’s just part of the process, keep moving forward.
⚠️ Taking On Too Much: Trying to change everything at once is overwhelming! Focus on one small habit at a time. Once you make that change stick, move on to the next goal.
⚠️ Fear of Failing Publicly: Sharing your goals can be motivating, but it can also add pressure. Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you.

Tips for Success
🌱 Start Small and Build: Big changes begin with small, realistic steps. Want to be more active? Start with a short walk or a quick stretch each day.
🔄 Stay Flexible: Plans don’t always go perfectly, and that’s okay. Adjust your goals when needed instead of giving up altogether.
🤝 Lean on Support: Whether it’s a friend, partner, or someone who’s walked a similar path, having support can make your goals feel more achievable.

Remember, progress is more important than perfection. If you find yourself struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

At On Track, we’re here to support you in creating positive, lasting changes—any time of the year.

✨ Not Feeling Festive? That’s Okay! ✨

The holiday season isn’t joyful for everyone. For some, it’s a reminder of loved ones lost, challenging family dynamics, or unmet expectations. While Beaufort St is bustling with festive cheer, it’s normal to feel out of step with the season’s energy.

💡 Tip 1: Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s okay to not feel okay. Suppressing emotions often makes them stronger. Instead, allow yourself to sit with your feelings, journal about them, or talk to someone you trust.

💡 Tip 2: Plan for Quiet Moments
Sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is permission to step back. Take a calming walk at the beach or enjoy a slower-paced activity like browsing a bookstore or enjoying a coffee and cake at a local café. These little pauses can help you reset.

💡 Tip 3: Focus on What You Can Control
Holidays can feel overwhelming when expectations are high. Shift your focus to small, manageable actions: send a thoughtful message, light a candle for someone you miss, or take time to practice gratitude for simple comforts.

At On Track Psychology, we understand that the holidays can bring challenges. Whether it’s loneliness, stress, or grief, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Reach out for support, and let’s work through this together.

🎄 It’s the Most Wonderful (and Stressful) Time of the Year! 🎄

As Perth lights up with festive cheer, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by holiday preparations. Between shopping in the city and planning Christmas gatherings, remember to prioritize your mental health!

✅ Tip: Schedule "me-time" amidst the busyness – a walk through Hyde Park, a coffee break at your favorite local café, or simply pausing to breathe.

✅ Tip: Create a "holiday stress checklist." Write down tasks you can realistically achieve and prioritize them. Break big goals into smaller steps and celebrate each accomplishment. Remember, perfection isn’t the goal—connection and joy are!

Struggling to stay on track? At On Track Psychology, we're here to help you find balance and peace this season.
