Our state of mind greatly influences how we experience life.

Acceptance in response to a situation involves acknowledging and accepting your feelings, recognising what you can or cannot do about the situation and moving forward accordingly. You can be unhappy with a situation yet accept what has occurred. Accepting what currently is, does not mean you cannot choose to try and change the situation. It does mean that in the present moment, rather than resist what is true, you acknowledge your feelings and accept the present moment.

For example, you feel sad and disappointed about failing a test. You practise acceptance and recognise that you likely can't do anything to change what has occurred. So, you acknowledge your feelings and treat yourself with compassion. You consider how you want to move forward and decide to ask for feedback or engage a tutor before your next test.

Body image is fluid; we don’t like in a bubble. Our life circumstances are constantly changing, our feelings are ever-changing, our knowledge is constantly growing, and our bodies will change as we experience the different seasons of life. Even if we reach a place of body acceptance, it is unrealistic to assume that our feelings towards out bodies will remain stagnant. As perfectly imperfect humans, it’s ok and normal for our body image to fluctuate. How would it feel to meet this with acceptance rather than disappointment, so that you can find the freedom to get on with the more important things in life?

What do you think this is? A soft boiled egg? Well, it’s actually a delicious passion fruit, yoghurt and poppy seed dessert.

The point is that looks can be deceiving. We often don't know what is truly going on for someone.

Keep this in mind the next time you compare yourself against someone else.

When we compare, our brain often creates a story about the person we are comparing with. This story may be driven by messages we've received from diet culture, for example, if we have the "perfect" body then we'll have the "perfect" life.

This is especially prevalent in the age of social media, where we are seeing a nanosecond of someone’s life, and our mind is filling in the blanks with a story of how amazing their life must be. It’s important to recognise your assumptions, and ask yourself, “what am I assuming right now about this person? What am I assuming about their life?” Remind yourself that no one’s life is perfect. Often, we have no idea what’s really going on for someone.

Let’s talk finding purpose and Identity…

Eating disorders offer a false sense of purpose and identity or a means to ‘feel better’, ‘achieve’ or ‘feel connected’. In reality, eating disorders lead to social isolation and poor physical and mental health. Instead of having a well-rounded life with various valued areas (family, friends, interests, hobbies, work, study, etc.), eating disorder beliefs and behaviours take up so much space that other areas of your life shrink to accommodate. So, it’s no wonder an eating disorder can feel like your entire identity.

Recovery involves finding purpose and identity outside of your eating disorder. Sometimes we’re made to feel that our purpose and identity should primarily come from one aspect of our life, for example, work or family. The problem is that nothing stays the same forever; you’ll eventually change jobs and retire, kids grow up and move out, etc. For this reason, I think our purpose and identity should come from various valued areas of our life. You could be a mother, a teacher, an amateur chef, a recreational cyclist, an avid reader, a loving sibling, a caring friend, a psychology student, a nature lover, a climate activist, the possibilities are endless. And without focusing on eating disorder beliefs and behaviours, you’ll have the space to figure out who you truly are.

I had a conversation with a client the other day about tv shows and movies as a distraction strategy, and it reminded me that in the midst of my eating disorder, I would struggle to watch anything. I had difficulty focusing, felt guilty sitting still, and my attention span was short. Now I love watching tv shows and movies; it is my favourite way to unwind. This might sound insignificant, but it is just one of the MANY ways an eating disorder robs you of the things you enjoy.

Also, if you have any show or movie recommendations, let me know as Merv 🐶 and I power through them now days.

You do not need to love or even like how your body looks to show your body respect by treating it with dignity and meeting its needs.

In the past couple of years, I have noticed a growing awareness of the importance of self-care, and I believe that showing your body respect is one of the most important forms of self-care.

What does it mean to show your body respect? Feeding yourself regularly and adequately, allowing yourself to rest, practicing joyful movement, speaking to yourself with kindness, etc.
