Conditions you might not know about #4: Trigeminal Nerve Impingement
The trigeminal nerve supplies sensation to the face. When it’s irritated or compressed, it can lead to intense facial pain and discomfort.
🔍 Likely causes
• Muscle tension in the jaw, neck or face
• Prolonged time in certain postures (especially prolonged screen use)
• Jaw clenching or jaw joint problems
• Neck issues or nerve irritation

⚡ Common symptoms
• Sharp, stabbing or electric‑shock facial pain
• Pain with chewing, talking or brushing teeth
• Facial sensitivity or aching
• Neck and jaw tightness
• Drooping face

👐 How physiotherapy may help
Physiotherapy can help by addressing muscle tension, posture, jaw and neck mechanics, and nerve mobility. Treatment may include manual therapy, posture correction, jaw exercises, and education to reduce flare‑ups and improve daily function.

✨ Early management can make a big difference. If facial pain is persistent or worsening, seek appropriate medical assessment.

Conditions you might not know about #3: Lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a long‑term condition where swelling occurs due to a build‑up of lymphatic fluid. It’s more common than many people realise, affecting an estimated 1 in 1,000 Australians, and is especially prevalent in people who have undergone cancer treatment.

✨ Who’s Most at Risk?
Certain groups have a higher likelihood of developing lymphoedema, including:
• People who’ve had lymph node removal or radiation therapy (especially for breast, gynaecological, prostate, or melanoma cancers)
• Individuals with venous disease, chronic swelling, or recurrent infections
• Those with obesity, reduced mobility, or a family history of lymphatic conditions
• People with primary lymphoedema, a genetic form that can appear at any age

When Should You See a Physio?
Early assessment makes a huge difference. Reach out to a physiotherapist trained in lymphoedema management if you notice:
• Persistent swelling in an arm, leg, breast, abdomen, face, or ge****ls
• A feeling of heaviness, tightness, or reduced movement
• Skin changes, aching, or recurring infections
• Swelling that doesn’t improve with rest or elevation

Physios can help with early diagnosis, compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise programs, and self‑management strategies to keep you moving comfortably and confidently.

Conditions you might not know about #2: Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic condition where fat accumulates disproportionately, usually in the legs, hips, and sometimes arms. This fat is resistant to diet and exercise and often causes pain, tenderness, and easy bruising. Many people mistake lipedema for obesity, which delays proper treatment.

Common Symptoms:
Disproportionate fat in lower body
Swelling that worsens during the day
Pain or heaviness in affected areas
Skin sensitivity and frequent bruising

Diagnosis is usually best done by GP or specialist.

Treatment Options:
While there’s no cure, combining physiotherapy with other approaches like compression garments, healthy lifestyle choices, and in some cases, surgical interventions, can make life significantly better.

Conditions you might not know about #1: Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)

FND is one of those conditions that sits at the crossroads of the brain and body. It’s life‑altering, and for many people it arrives suddenly, with symptoms like limb weakness, tics, difficulty walking, dissociation, or non‑epileptic seizures.
What makes FND unique is that the nervous system isn’t damaged, but it’s not functioning as it should - think of a computer: the hardware is fine, but there's a bug in the software. Signals get scrambled, movement patterns become disrupted, and the body stops responding in the ways we expect.
It's suspected that about 40% of emergency visits for these symptoms are in fact FND.

That can feel frightening, invalidating, or confusing. But here’s the hopeful part: because the nervous system is adaptable, people with FND can improve — and physiotherapy is one of the most powerful tools to help make that happen.
It focuses on retraining the brain-body connection. Think of it as helping the nervous system learn a clearer, more efficient way to communicate again

If you or someone you know has FND, feel free to come to us to learn more.

July is Disability Pride Month!

Take a moment to appreciate how "normal" is different for everyone - and how we might not be able to see it.
People within the disability community are really doing it tough right now due to the changes within the NDIS. Many are going without the services they need.
If you know someone in your circle who may be going through something, be it visible or invisible, make sure you reach out!
If you are that someone, keep going! You're doing what you can, and that is enough.

And if you need a physio, we are here.

Physiotherapy is surprisingly important for helping with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
Not only does it assist with developing awareness of the body, it is very important for people with hypotonia (low muscle tone), which is one of the ways ASD appears physically. Hypotonia can make muscles feel weak and floppy, causing problems with movement and posture.
Physiotherapy may be able to help by:
• Strengthening muscles with exercises.
• Improving movement and coordination.
• Teaching new ways to move.
• Helping with sitting, standing, and walking.
• Managing pain.
