UNDERSTANDING AT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?
Understanding the discomfort or pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can often be a cause for alarm with those who are unfortunate enough to experience it, and according to the AAFP foundation 3 to 6 percent of adults in the general population have some form of carpal tunnel syndrome.
It can start to develop through a stress or fracture to the wrist or Postural disturbances as a result of muscle weakness and nerve entrapment from the neck down the arm.
Symptoms can result in swelling and adhesions which then press on the Median nerve.
There are many other conditions that can also mimic Carpal tunnel syndrome that can produce similar symptoms as a result of nerve entrapment or aggravation to the median nerve that travels down the arm through the carpal tunnel of wrist and hand, this in itself has and still does lead to wrong diagnosis by health care professionals.
Such as
DOUBLE CRUSH SYNDROME - involving both cervical spinal nerve roots and the carpal tunnel. compressive lesions at the wrist, that are also affected by nerve impingement in the upper cervical neck, shoulder and arm, which can contribute to another nerve syndrome called
THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME – nerve compression of the Brachial Plexus nerve between the first rib and clavicle or collar bone that will send an aching radiant pain down the arm.
RADIAL TUNNEL SYNDROME - a syndrome resulting from the compression of the posterior interosseous nerve at the proximal forearm. Research has shown it is more prevalent in women with the age of 30 to 50 years old. Aggravation is felt on the radial nerve travelling right through the inferior border of the supinator muscle as a result of muscle weakness.
Clients typically report aggravated pain at nights that may interfere with sleeping. The pain can also become more severe when increased traction is applied to the nerve by extending the elbow, pronating the forearm, or flexing the wrist.
DE QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS SYNDROME - The pain due to the irritation of the superficial branch of the radial nerve can be mimicked by De Quervain’s tenosynovitis syndrome. This is where the nerve or tendon is restricted in movement by adhesions in the tissue layers surrounding them and can cause an inflammatory response.
BICIPITAL APONEUROSIS TENDINOSIS – This is where a lot of miss diagnosis’ of carpal tunnel Syndrome can originate from, the biceps muscle or the biceps aponeurosis, “a variant of the deep fascia surrounding the biceps”, can develop scaring and adhesions that swell and compress against the median nerve that then travels through a compromised pronator teres muscle down into the carpal tunnel itself, this also can give an identical feeling of weakness or aggravation similar to carpal tunnel syndrome.
Unfortunately over 90% of misdiagnosed cases of carpal tunnel syndrome wonder why there original symptoms return after surgery, now they have 2 problems, scar tissue from the surgery and according to mycarpaltunnel.com surgery can weaken the tissues around the carpal tunnel itself, that may then lead to a genuine carpal tunnel syndrome, then the biceps aponeurosis tendinosis tear that went undetected in the original diagnosis of the healthcare specialist continues to aggravate the median nerve from the inner epicondyle area of elbow joint. OUCH!
True carpal tunnel syndrome is different because it causes local discomfort or pain to emulate from the wrist and hand flexors, the flexor retinaculum in particular, an overuse or tension causes the weakness or swelling to develop in the wrist flexor tendons! especially the flexor retinaculum that then compresses in on the median nerve travelling underneath leading to what is classed as "true" carpal tunnel syndrome.
Development of symptoms can start suddenly as if out of nowhere. Evidently some cases of metabolic disorders involving the pituitary and thyroid gland can also be a contributing factor in some people, that can trigger symptoms.
For those who suffer any of these conditions often experience frustration associated with the condition which affects their daily function and quality of life are highly motivated to seek help or find a way to relieve the dreaded discomfort of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Causes
There can be many different causes associate with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, such as a musicians use of instruments that require repetitive use of the hands and wrist, or a builder’s constant drilling can result in repetitive strain disorders over time or simply weakness in muscle tissue or skeletal structures.
HOW IS CARPAL TUNNEL TREATED?
Traditionally, Carpal Tunnel treatment has been limited to decompression surgeries, physiotherapy, and prescription medicines. Due to the fact that these options often fail to deal with the underlying problem as a result mentioned earlier, they may only provide short-term relief and as research has shown can be completely ineffective much of the time.
When left untreated, or when unsuccessfully treated, people are forced to adapt their lifestyles to accommodate this debilitating issue.
Fortunately, many people through manual therapy are finding long-term relief from Carpal Tunnel or similar Syndromes, and most importantly getting the right diagnosis as to the underlying reason for the symptom’s development in the first place.
Rivers Myoskeletal has already had great success in dealing with nerve and structural disturbances in many of our clients over the years and eliminating the painful aggravating symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, if you are noticing any signs of Carpal Tunnel or similar Syndromes do not hesitate to call Rivers Myoskeletal today for a free consultation.

Thank you so much Deke! Can't believe how good I feel after just 2 treatments! I will definitely be returning for more. Worth the 3-hour drive just to feel and move around like I'm 10 years younger. Thank you so so much!
