The object or subject of your meditation is a personal preference - what works for you might not work for someone else. It can be anything you like, with a caution... it should be something that leads you to greater steadiness and peace, not something that leads you in the other direction 🥰🙏

Meditation is the skill of placing your attention somewhere and keeping it there by choice. It is a deeply personal and subjective practice, with progress that is often internal, invisible, and difficult to measure. Unlike posture or breath, the mind cannot be directly observed, making each practitioner’s journey unique.

There is no single, standardized method that suits everyone. Traditions offer a variety of techniques—mantra, breathwork, mindfulness, visualization—but the key is to understand your own mind and adapt accordingly. The path is not linear; different people access different stages at different times.

A foundational practice is accessible to most, but deepening it presents real challenges. Questions arise: What do you do when stuck? Do you switch practices or stay the course? What is the purpose of your meditation? These evolve with experience.

Modern psychology often reduces meditation to measurable protocols, which, while helpful, can oversimplify a rich, nuanced tradition. Meditation is not about rigid outcomes or statistics—it’s about direct, lived experience.

For those who were in class this morning - when I spoke of the yogins who have transcended the limitations of their own thoughts, opinions and beliefs - this statement by Easwaran expands a little more on that state of freedom.
🧘‍♀️The yogin is grounded and stable in the experience of just being, the mind is clear and the heart is open and compassionate. The yogin understands that, though we all like to think we are unique and individual, we are in fact all alike in our human-ness. We all want an experience free from suffering. We all want to be happy.
☺️ From that place of understanding and transcendence, there is no division or separation, no "us and them" mentality. And what is a "mentality" but a chosen thought position? The moment we choose a thought position we begin to defend it and we become limited. Bound by that thought, opinion, belief.
👉And then open becomes closed, the whole becomes divided, we become separate from the "other", and we fight to hold onto our position. For a time, we feel safe in our "knowledge". But ultimately, it binds us into a limited experience.

Have a little read of this info about interoception: perceiving our inner sensations. This ability is often compromised by stress and anxiety. While we are aware that we feel jittery, out-of-sorts or unsafe, we may feel unable to exert any influence over changing these feeling states. The various components of the yoga practice help us pay attention to our experience, connect, acknowledge and then, with knowledge and application, gently transform our feeling states and thus, our overall experience 🌸❤️

Interoception is the experience of internal body sensations. It is received by the brain substantially through the vagus nerve. The feedback loops of interoception and the output of the brain to the viscera are crucial for the wellbeing of our physiology.

Breathing offers excellent possibilities to enhance our capacity of interoception:

• Breath sensations are partly external (e.g. abdominal wall and chest well) and partly internal (e.g. pressure, movement inside the torso).

• Breath also brings our attention to other interoceptive sensations (e.g. hunger, satiety, energy).

• Through breath, interoception guides us towards active movement and proprioception, we can integrate body sensations into larger patterns of feeling (e.g. safety, strength, stability).

Āsana is only one aspect of the yoga pathway, just as the body is only one aspect of our human experience!

Āsana is only one aspect of the yoga pathway, just as the body is only one aspect of our human experience!

Without a healthy body it is very difficult to have a calm mind. But an ideal body and an ideal yoga pose are trite goals; there are wiser and more lasting life goals we could be pursuing through the practice of yoga. Consequently, the practice of asanas in yoga is not an end in itself. Asana is a means to positive transformation in the body and mind. Its goal is to bring lightness and brightness into body and mind and, ultimately, into every aspect of our lives.
