Yesterday I had a DEXA scan! And I dragged hubby along for one too. Yes this is us - I got photos.
I am super excited about having my results to use as a baseline now that I’m 45 and in early Peri.
I occasionally have sent clients to get a DEXA but it’s something I’m going to encourage more and more.
There are two groups of people I believe should strongly consider prioritising paying for a DEXA scan:
1. Women entering perimenopause and beyond
2. Anyone using GLP-1 medications/injections with rapid weight loss.
Why?
As women enter perimenopause, estrogen begins to decline — and with it can come accelerated changes in:
• decreasing bone density
• decreasing lean muscle mass
• decreased strength
• decreased metabolism
For those using GLP-1 injections- often times with appetite suppression we see a decreased nutritional intake, and while this achieves weight loss it can often include loss of valuable lean muscle mass AND bone mass. Not only is this very worrying for our later heads if will also guarantee a rebound weight gain!
Loss of bone mass can lead to osteoporosis and also cognitive decline as we get older.
Loss of muscle mass means less metabolically active and less strength and support around our joints.
A DEXA scan gives insight into:
• lean muscle mass
• body fat percentage
• visceral fat - the dangerous fat around our organs
• bone density
• changes in body composition over time
Because healthy ageing is not just about skincare or losing weight.
It’s about preserving muscle, bone, strength and metabolic health for the long term.
Lastly having this as a baseline, if we get our mindset right, we can use this as a powerful motivator to start making positive changes focusing on what really matters - not the number on the scale - but strength, visceral fat and mobility.
Feel free to ask me any questions or DM how I would
Use this to support my clients with health and healthy aging!
