Iron is a mineral that can be found in proteins such as red meats, poultry and fish, and vegetables including spinach, sweet potato and broccoli. It is also available as a dietary supplement.
Iron is important to the body as it plays a central role in supporting the function of the immune system, hormone synthesis, brain development and muscle growth.
Iron also helps to support life. It forms haemoglobin, a component of red blood cells that transports oxygen around your body allowing your organs to function effectively.
As such, those with low iron deficiency can experience adverse effects on their health including suboptimal physical and mental performance, lack of concentration, shortness of breath, chest pains, cold intolerance and impaired function to their immune system.
Low iron deficiency can be acquired through a multitude of ways including heavy menstrual and gastrointestinal bleeding, certain gastrointestinal surgeries, and conditions including Crohnโs disease and coeliac disease. Sometimes, oral iron supplements may not be effective or tolerated, and dietary iron may not be sufficient.
Pregnant women are susceptible to low iron deficiency as their blood volume increases to support extra oxygen and nutrient demands by the mother and growing fetus.
Iron infusions are a fast and effective way of restoring an individualโs iron levels when other methods are not suitable or exhausted. Mineral iron goes directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gut to maximise absorption, and gets metabolised sooner.
If you have suspected or diagnosed low iron deficiency, and you think an iron infusion might be right for you, make an appointment with one of our doctors to assess your eligibility.
