A common complaint I hear from parents all the time. My child is “sick all the time” and the chest is always clear. There might just be a ENT implication for that.

Djaalinj Waakinj ear health programme.

The average waiting time for some kids with ear infections can be up to 2 years. Missing out in their hearing impacts on language and educational development.

Djaalinj Waakinj is a unique partnership to help kids with ear infections have a “sound” start to school!

An article I wrote for Inside Health about common paediatric ENT issues causing sleep disturbance in a child. Sometimes symptoms can be very subtle. If you are concerned, always make an appointment to see your GP for an initial assessment.

Young children’s sleep disorders will likely affect the household’s sleep quality and overall energy levels. Lack of good quality sleep in children or adolescents may impact growth, school performa…

Daycase surgeries will restart this week for the little ones needing their grommets and treatment for ear infections. Overnight surgeries (tonsillectomies; turbinate surgery) will commence in 2 weeks.

This is a gradual reinstating of service levels. In the mean time, I encourage you to visit your regular GPs as well for any issues.

Our country patients who had surgery, mainly adeno-tonsillectomy, are still required to stay in the Perth Metropolitan area for the full 14 days postop for safety reasons. I'm sure you've heard me say it before - travelling around Western Australia is a world-class experience.

From the unique landscapes of the Kimberley and Pilbara to the gourmet paradise of the South West, and everything in between, our State has so much to see and do.

But, sadly, this just isn't the time for it.

We've made the extremely difficult and completely unprecedented decision to shut down travel between WA's regions.

From midnight Tuesday, restrictions will be placed on travel within the entire State of Western Australia.

Western Australians will not be permitted to leave their regional boundary.

It’s absolutely vital every Western Australian understands – you cannot travel within WA. It must stop immediately.

Police have the power to enforce these restrictions if necessary, and fines of up to $50,000 can be issued.

To be clear, those are: the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Mid-West, Goldfields-Esperance, Wheatbelt, Great Southern and South West.

Due to their proximity and interconnected nature, Perth and Peel will be treated as one region.

The health and safety of people in regional Western Australia must be our priority.

Exemptions will apply for, among other things, essential services and workers, including health and emergency services; people living in ‘border communities’, who may not have access to groceries or supplies within their region; employment purposes; medical reasons; transport of essential goods and some compassionate grounds.

Additional restrictions to remote Aboriginal communities were announced by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt this week, to provide extra protection to these vulnerable communities.

If you are currently away from home - you need to come back. Now.

If you were planning a trip - you cannot go.

But I have one important request - don't cancel your bookings with our regional hotels, tours or other providers - postpone them instead.

This won't last forever, so let's do what we can to make sure those businesses are still there once it is over.

That next trip will just be so much sweeter.

25/03/2020

Everyone is part of this war against our invisible enemy. We will win this war but only with the help of every single Australian in this together. If you have no essential needs to get out of your house, there is only one message:

STAY AT HOME

Viruses don’t spread themselves: people spread it.

Every interaction we have with someone else is a risk of transmission.

That means we need to keep our distance from others, if we can.

There are simple things we need you to do to help our efforts.

Cut down on trips out of the house, keep at least a metre and half between yourself and others at all times.

Stay away from crowded places, stay home if you feel unwell.

Avoid all non-essential travel within WA.

Don’t host or attend gatherings in homes.

Just because the bars are shut doesn’t mean you should throw a house party or have mates around.

It’s not as harmless as you think.

We are completely serious about this. Limiting physical interactions is key to getting on top of this crisis.

The research doesn’t lie: if we don’t cut down our own social interactions, everything else we are doing is in vain:

The tireless efforts of health workers.

The business closures.

The border restrictions.

The sacrifices being made right across the community.

Please, if you can, stay home.

You’ll be saving lives.

Due to the current situation with COVID-19, the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery(ASOHNS) has advised all its members to cease face to face consultations. All elective ENT surgeries have to be deferred as well. This will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

I am continuing to provide my services but as phone consultations only. My office is still open and can be contactable by phone, email or fax. All phone consults have been allocated new MBS item numbers and are fully rebatable.

I seek your understanding at this challenging time. Thank you.

As a part of our coronavirus precautions and to help protect everyone in our hospitals, we ask that patients in our acute hospitals have only one designated visitor for the duration of their stay, and that no other visitors access our hospitals during this time.
