Are you pregnant and interested in high level resistance training?
One of our new members of Southcare's Pelvic Health Physio team, Mel Wilks, sums up the latest research...
"This research article from the BJSM in 2025 suggests that healthy pregnant women, who are familiar with resistance training, can safely maintain their training intensities into their second and third trimester. It’s worth noting that this was a small study of 10 pregnant women, and larger studies are needed to fully understand the implications of higher-level resistance training during pregnancy. However, it provides initial promising data for women wishing to continue training at higher loads, as part of meeting the weekly exercise guidelines for pregnancy."

New research challenges existing guidelines that discourage high-intensity resistance exercise during pregnancy, providing evidence that it can be well tolerated by both the mother and fetus.
