Rockin Our Abilities

Rockin Our Abilities Music and drama programme for people with disabilities in our regional area. Bringing joy, social networking through music 🎵 Mondays 55 Gore St Murgon .

Wednesday Lutheran Church Hall Markwell St Kingaroy during QLD school Rockin Our Abilities is a music/drama programme for people with disabilities, living in regional QLD in the South Burnett region. Rockin Our Abilities was formed back in 2021, out of a need for a safe place with social involvement and activities for the with disabilties - Something very much lacking in our region. All of our par

ticipants thrive in the setting and it is truly the hi-light of their week. Music is the thread that binds us all. We are fortunate to have a very talented young guitarist/drummer with autism who is the backbone of our Live Band called R.O.A.R (Rockin Our Abilities Regional). Jarrod Edwards is surrounded by support workers who also play instruments and so a band was formed. Twice yearly we put on a few community concert at 55 Gore Street Murgon to showcase the diverse group and all the skills that have been taught. The community are always so thrilled and everybody loves them. It is a true stage show where all participants get the chance to shine. Rockin Our Abilities is self-funded. We fundraise at all our events with raffles and a sausage sizzle. We have been blessed with sponsorship from the start and welcome any help. We are auspiced by a Non for Profit group called The Graham House Community Centre based in Murgon. Our concerts are filmed so please check them out on Youtube - Rockin Our Abilities.

🎹 Meet David Shortland 🎹

We are delighted to welcome pianist and keyboardist David Shortland to our upcoming Rockin Our Abilities Mid-Year Concert at the Murgon Town Hall.

David, who is visually impaired, has a remarkable talent for music and has generously written an original song especially for one of our participants, Donna.

The song has been created just for her and will be performed live at the concert ... a truly special moment that showcases the power of music, creativity and inclusion.

We recently caught up with David at a recent rehearsal and recorded a short interview, where he shares a little about himself, his music, and the inspiration behind the song he has written for Donna. Keep an eye on our page ... we'll be sharing his interview soon!

Be sure to join us on 20 June to see David and Donna and the band perform this special collaboration live on stage.

What a beautiful example of community kindness.

Denise and Wayne from Wondai called into our Rockin’ Our Abilities rehearsal on Monday to donate a number of ukuleles so our participants can learn this wonderful instrument.

But the story gets even better…

While visiting a music store in Toowoomba to purchase the ukuleles, a gentleman named Glenn overheard Denise and Wayne talking about the group and their plans to donate the instruments. Touched by what he heard, Glen from Oakey, with permission from his daughter Jasmine, generously offered up their own ukuleles to support the program.

Denise and Wayne took a detour home via Oakey to collect the instruments before gifting them to Rockin’ Our Abilities.

The joy on Theresa’s face, one of our young participants from Cherbourg who has always wanted to learn the ukulele, said it all. Denise has also kindly offered to provide Theresa with in-kind lessons to help her begin her ukulele musical journey.

Stories like this remind us just how special our community really is. Thank you to everyone involved for your generosity, kindness and belief in what we do.
