Advanced Care Directive Information Session for Elders!

Moorundi’s Elder Care Program is pleased to invite Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Elders to our first Advanced Care Directive Information Session at the Goolwa Community Centre.

This session is designed to support Elders to build a stronger understanding of what an Advanced Care Directive is and why it is such an important tool for making sure your wishes for future care are known and respected.

This session is designed to:

• support Elders by breaking down medical and legal language to provide clear information about what can be included in an Advanced Care Directive
• offer a culturally safe space for Elders to ask questions and yarn about their choices
• provide Elders with an Advanced Care Directive Kit if they wish to begin completing one

Session Details:

📆 Thursday, 2 April 2026
⏰ 1:00pm – 3:00pm
📍 Goolwa Community Centre, 25 Cadell Street, Goolwa SA 5214

Light refreshments will be provided.

This video has been developed as part of health promotion project by Shreya and Anish, physiotherapy students at the Adelaide University. The project explores how virtual reality can reduce fear and anxiety in children during medical procedures, including immunisations. We are evaluating the effectiveness of this video in improving understanding, perceptions, and willingness to use virtual reality in healthcare settings.

Your feedback will help determine whether this approach is meaningful, appropriate, and beneficial for children and their families.

On Tuesday, our teams gathered together at Warland Reserve in Victor Harbor for our Close the Gap event, where we collaborated with Dr. Michelle King‑Okoye from UniSA, whose important work focuses on prostate cancer. We are incredibly grateful to Cancer Australia for proudly sponsoring and supporting this event.

The event began with a beautiful Welcome to Country by Aunty Rosemary Kartinyeri, setting the tone for a gathering grounded in culture, respect, and connection. This was followed by a cultural performance from a local dance group.

One of the highlights of the day was an Elders’ Yarning Circle led by Dr. Michelle King-Okoye. The discussion around women’s health created a culturally safe and meaningful space for sharing stories, strengthening connections, and empowering our community.

We are proud to have created a welcoming environment where our mob could come together to yarn, learn, and support one another. Events like this remind us how powerful community can be as we walk together toward better health and wellbeing.

A big thank you to all the stallholders and individuals who made this event possible. Including:

Breast Screen SA
Diabetes SA
Headspace, Victor Harbor
Mission Australia
Wilbur’s Wildlife
Skylight
Sisters Acai and Coffee
Victor Harbor Rotary Club
The Station

Thank you once again to everyone who joined us and made this event a success.

About Moorundi services

OUR GOALS

Bringing Community Together

Our first goal which is central to all the other goals is bringing community together. We cannot deliver health services merely from a clinical care perspective. The health of our community depends on the health of our culture which depends on the health of our lands. When our culture is not well, then our community is not well. We are strong when we are together and not well when we are disconnected.

Ensuring that we, as part of our community, are focused on the health and wellbeing of our community and our culture will ensure improved health outcomes for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on Ngarrindjeri Ruwe.
