Scientists have discovered that MRI scans using contrast agents may trigger harmful reactions inside the body.

A metal called gadolinium, used to improve scan clarity, can bond with natural compounds like oxalic acid.

This reaction forms nanoparticles that may settle in organs such as the brain or kidneys.

Even people with healthy kidney function have shown traces of these materials in their tissues.

Some rare cases have resulted in a serious illness called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.

It can cause skin thickening, joint pain, and internal organ complications over time.

Although most patients are unaffected, the findings raise new concerns about long-term exposure.

Experts now call for more research into safer imaging options and reduced reliance on gadolinium.

If you're scheduled for a contrast MRI, it may be worth discussing alternatives with your doctor.

The goal is clarity in diagnosis without risking hidden consequences in the process.

According to a recent study, forward head position and blood flow to the brain are clinically observable by taking the carotid pulses and can lead to debilitating symptoms within the brain.

The carotid pulses are weaker when the head is in a forward position; however, the carotid pulses are stronger when the head is over the spine.

When the head is forward over the spine, the brain may not receive sufficient blood flow and oxygen due to compression of the carotid arteries. If this compression is severe enough, it can result in cerebral ischemia (CNS dysfunction). Clinically, we see disturbed sleeping patterns, increased anxiety, and mental N sluggishness.

The March 2000 Mayo Clinic reported that prolonged FHP also leads to myospasm, disc herniations, arthritis, and pinched nerves.

Dr. Alf Breig, a Swedish neurosurgeon and Nobel Prize recipient, describes how the loss of a normal cervical lordotic curve creates dysfunction and disease.

Through cadaver studies, Dr. Breig demonstrated that neck flexion could stretch the spinal cord 5-7 cm causing tensioning of the meninges (covering of the brain and spinal cord) and elicit measurable pressure on brainstem nuclei (nerve control centers) which control all basic life functions. (Breig, Alf.
Adverse Mechanical Tension in the Central Nervous System: An Analysis of Cause and Effect. 1978. Almqvuist & Wiksell
International, Stockholm, Sweden. Pg. 177.)

New studies show that correction of cervical lordosis may be associated with an immediate increase in cerebral blood flow.

When RICE was first suggested back in the 70s it wasn’t even based on research (see our previous blog post). Even the person who came up with the RICE principle says it is no longer valid! It is now widely accepted that both ice and complete rest may delay healing, instead of helping.

So how should new injuries be treated then?
Well, more current research has suggested that acute soft tissue injuries just need some ‘PEACE’ & ‘LOVE’.

Immediately after an injury, you need to give your body some PEACE:

P = Protect
Minimise movement in the affected area for 1-3 days reduce the risk of re-aggravating the injury. Rest however should be kept to a minimum, as prolonged rest can reduce tissue strength.

E = Elevation
Elevate the limb higher than the heart to promote flow of fluid out of the injured area.

A = Avoid Anti-Inflammatories
Inflammation is actually the bodies way of repairing injured tissue. Therefore, the use of anti-inflammatories in the few days after an injury may actually slow healing.

C = Compression
Use bandages or taping to help reduce localised swelling.

E = Education
Speak to a health professional!

Returning to activity, you need some LOVE!

L = Load
Return to normal activity should start as soon as symptoms allow. Gently loading without stirring up pain helps promote tissue repair.

O = Optimism
Being optimistic about your injury is actually associated with more better recovery!

V = Vascularisation
Pain free aerobic (or cardiovascular) exercise should be started a few days after the initial injury. It can help boost motivation and increase blood flow to the injured site.

E = Exercise
For long term tissue health and prevention of recurrent injuries, exercise is key! By restoring strength, movement and balance after injury, you can give yourself the best chance to be injury free in the future.
