πŸ“š School brings so many exciting things to learn. Reading, writing, listening, sharing ideas and making friends.

Before children can confidently keep up with classroom activities, their hands and bodies are learning important foundations.

Fine motor skills help children hold pencils, cut with scissors, build shapes and complete small tasks with control. Focus skills help them stay engaged long enough to practise and learn.

These foundations often grow through play first.

✨ squeezing and rolling playdough
✨ drawing shapes and lines
✨ building small structures
✨ exploring hands on activities

When children build these skills early, they feel more confident using learning tools in the classroom.

And the best part is that practice often looks like play. 🎨

At Melville OT we love creating playful ways for children to practise these important skills while having fun too.

Behind every therapy session at Melville OT is a team of incredible women who care deeply about the children and families they support. πŸ’œ

This Women’s Month, we are celebrating the therapists, team members, and professionals who bring their knowledge, creativity, and compassion into our therapy spaces every day.

They spend their days helping children build skills, confidence, and independence through play-based learning and supportive relationships.

Their work might look like:
✨ celebrating a child’s first successful attempt
✨ encouraging a child to try again
✨ helping families understand their child’s strengths
✨ creating playful ways to build important skills

And sometimes it also includes

🎲 getting a little competitive during games
πŸ¦’ pretending to be animals during play
🎨 getting messy with craft and sensory play
πŸ˜‚ sharing plenty of laughter and silly moments along the way

These moments may seem small, but they are powerful.

Because when children feel safe, supported, and even a little bit silly, they are often ready to learn and grow. 🌿

To the wonderful women of Melville OT and the women in our community who inspire and support children every day, we celebrate you. 🌸

March is a time to celebrate the incredible women who make a difference every day. πŸ’œ

At Melville OT, our team is made up of passionate therapists who bring knowledge, compassion, creativity and care into every session.

They support children as they learn new skills.
They support families through challenges and milestones.
And they support one another as a team.

Women supporting women is something powerful. 🌸

This year’s International Women’s Day theme reminds us that when we give support, encouragement, and opportunities to women, everyone benefits.

To the amazing women of Melville OT and to the women in our community who inspire us every day, we celebrate you. ✨

🌈 It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week

This year we are celebrating Different Minds and moving From Awareness to Action πŸ’‘

It is not just about understanding that every child is different. It is about what we do with that understanding.

✨ Some children learn through movement.
✨ Some need time and space to process.
✨ Some communicate in their own unique ways.
✨ Some see and experience the world differently.πŸ’‘

At Melville OT, action looks like:
✨ adapting the environment to suit the child
✨ following their interests and strengths
✨ supporting regulation before expectation
✨ creating safe spaces where children can be themselves

And yes, it often includes laughter, creativity, and a little bit of silliness too 😊

Because when we move beyond awareness and into action, children feel seen, supported, and ready to learn.

Different minds are not something to fix.
They are something to understand, support, and celebrate 🌿

Supporting children well begins with supporting the people who work alongside them 🀍

In our therapy space, staff wellbeing matters. Sometimes that looks like a quiet moment, a deep breath, or a quick journal check in between sessions.

Our Staff Wellness Journals give therapists a simple space to pause, reflect, and celebrate the little wins that happen every day.

Because therapy days can be full. Busy. Meaningful. And sometimes a little messy too. 😊

✨ resetting between sessions
✨ capturing special moments with children and families
✨ celebrating small wins
✨ keeping balance in a heart-filled profession

A calm, supported therapist brings calm, patience, and presence into therapy.

And that is often when the best learning, connection, and progress happens 🌿

Plus, sometimes the journal page just says
β€œToday was a really good therapy day.” πŸ’™

We recently explored the Super Ball Run by in our therapy space, and honestly, our therapists had just as much fun testing it out first 😊🌿

What stood out most was not the build itself, but the skills that naturally unfolded through play.

In our sessions, construction play like this helps us gently support:
✨ impulse control through waiting and turn-taking
✨ frustration tolerance when designs fall
✨ planning and sequencing
✨ fine motor coordination
✨ collaborative problem solving

Because it is open-ended, we can adapt the challenge to suit each child’s strengths and goals. One build might focus on patience and persistence, another on teamwork or flexible thinking. 🧩

It creates space for children to feel capable while strengthening regulation and executive functioning skills in a way that feels playful and motivating πŸ’™

Did you know open-ended construction play strengthens executive functioning, problem-solving, and regulation skills? 🌿🌈🧠

In our therapy space, we recently explored the Super Ball Run by Connetix Tiles , and honestly, we had just as much fun experimenting with it before introducing it to our children 😊

What we love most is not the pieces themselves, but the skills that emerge through play. There is something so engaging about building a design, testing it, watching it fall, adjusting it, and trying again.

Through this kind of play, children are naturally practising:
✨ planning and sequencing
✨ flexible thinking
✨ persistence
✨ turn-taking
✨ cause and effect understanding

What looks like simple fun is actually powerful learning in action. Once you start experimenting with it, it is easy to see why both kids and adults enjoy it.

We sourced ours from K and K Creative Toys and have loved exploring it in our therapy space alongside the children πŸ’™

When children are stressed, impulse control becomes much harder. When their bodies feel calm and supported, the thinking brain can stay online 🧠🌿.

✨ Benefits of regulation support

Weighted lap bags, sensory seating, and fidgets from Calming Kids Australia can help children stay regulated while they practise new skills. πŸ’™πŸ§Έ

The ability to stop, pause, and make a thoughtful choice is part of executive functioning, and it develops gradually through support, practice, and connection.

For many children, acting quickly or moving before thinking is not defiance. It is a sign their nervous system needs more help with regulation and awareness.

At Melville OT, we focus on strengthening the foundations that help children pause, think, and respond rather than react.

When regulation improves, impulse control becomes easier 🌿
When the body feels safe, the brain can problem solve.

🧠 Our therapy may include
✨ play based practice for waiting and turn taking
✨ learning to recognise body clues
✨ building emotional awareness and language
✨ calming strategies for stressful moments
✨ collaboration with families and schools so strategies are consistent

We aim to make these skills feel achievable, practical, and supportive in everyday life 🀍

Small moments of success grow into confidence. Confidence grows into independence.

If you would like guidance, we are always here to help πŸ’™

Impulse control does not switch on. It builds 🀍

🧠 The thinking brain develops slowly across childhood.

When stress rises, this system can go offline, and children may react quickly instead of thoughtfully.

This is not bad behaviour. It is a developing skill.

With co-regulation, repetition, and safe support, children gradually learn how to pause and choose 🌱

✨ Reminder: Progress matters more than perfection.

They are not giving you a hard time 🀍 They are having a hard time.

When children feel overwhelmed, their behaviour is communication. It is their nervous system asking for safety, reassurance, and someone steady to lean on.

An anxious child is often wondering, can I borrow your calm and certainty until I find my own πŸ’™

At Melville OT, we support parents and educators to recognise stress signals, understand what is happening underneath the behaviour, and respond in ways that build connection and regulation.

You do not have to figure this out by yourself. With the right guidance, calm can be shared and skills can grow 🌿

If you would like support, we are always here to help.
