Hypothalamic Amenorrhea - phew that's a mouthful! 🩸
We'll keep it simple - when you don't eat enough to match your energy output (through sport, work, stress etc), your hypothalamus stops producing the necessary hormones to stimulate ovulation aka your menstrual cycle stops.⚠️
The menstrual cycle requires a lot of energy from the body and simply put, if you aren't eating enough, your body wants to conserve energy and releasing an egg is simply not on the priority list.
Losing the menstrual cycle as a result of increase in training/decrease in calorie consumption is a strong warning sign that the body is overextended and not to be taken lightly.
Decreases in reproductive hormones can cause:
- Low bone density 🦴
- Brain fog/concentration issues 😴
- Decreased fertility 👶
- Drop in performance 🏃♀️
