🧠 REDs (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports) is a condition that affects multiple systems in the body. The tell-tale signs are often a lot more subtle than the obvious signs of being under-nourished (weight loss, fractures, complete loss of menstrual cycle).

🍜 When the body doesn't receive enough fuel from food, it becomes very effective at conserving energy and not allocating much needed resources to non essential functions - calcium from bones and teeth, slowing down thyroid hormones that affect hair growth cycles, breaking down muscle tissue to borrow glucose. Think of it as energy triage!

The body whispers before it screams - time to start listening! 🍽

Energy Availability refers to the quantity of dietary energy remaining available for your body to use to fuel bodily functions (brain, digestive, reproductive functions) AFTER accounting for energy spent on physical exercise.

Low Energy Availability (LEA) is a state that occurs when their is insufficient energy available in the body to fuel both exercise and physiological demands. This can have nefarious effects on energy, recovery, brain function and immunity.

LEA can often be unintentional- not properly understanding your energy needs, not increasing food intake alongside increased training, working a physical job or experiencing emotional stress can all lead to LEA. Consulting a registered dietitian can give you an accurate calculation of your energy needs. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by under-fuelling 🍌🥯🥗🍫🍜

After 3 amazing and jam packed years, it's time for MyoKiné and I to follow our feet and move on! What a privilege it's been to care for the wonderful Alpine Shire community's aches and pains. I'll never take for granted every single patient's trust in me for their care, and the care of their loved ones 🫶 thank you to my little Myrtleford community, I learned and laughed so much by your side! (And to never trust farmers when they say "I'm fine!") And a big thank you to Alpine Chiropractic (Eon, Julie and Rosanna) for their formidable care.

For now I am headed home 🇫🇷 (on June 15th) for a while but who knows where MyoKiné will spring up again 🌍

It's been a minute since I've seen one of these little guys on a foot so sharing here (with permission!).

Ganglion cysts are soft fluid filled benign lumps that can grow on tendons or joints. They are believed to be caused by friction, overuse or occasionally the presence of osteoarthritis.

This specific patient complained of pain wearing shoes and walking long distances. These are also super common in wrists! 👣

Having the privilege of working 1:1 with people as a sole trader in my business means that it's incredibly important for me to uphold and embody my values of integrity, compassion, and care towards each and every person that walks through my door.

As such, I believe that my responsibility goes beyond just the clinic room. I would hope that MyoKine can continue to reflect a strong sense of social responsibility and compassion through the MyoKind Initiative.

Every month, MyoKine will be donating funds to a new charity or not-for-profit towards a charitable cause. This month, I am choosing to donate to , specifically to the Sudanese refugee emergency where 6.6million people are currently internally displaced due to ongoing armed violence.

Please feel free to list any reputable organisations below for next month's donation, and of course please join me in taking action for where we are the most needed. Link here to donate: https://www.unrefugees.org.au/donate/ (Select Sudan Emergency)

Infusion day! 💉
After weeks (months?) Of feeling bloody exhausted and recovering poorly from training, I got a little old blood test that showed my iron levels at 13! (Healthy range for 30 yo woman being 30 minimum)

With the encouragement of my fellow iron deficient ladies .of.tia and I booked in for an infusion. This is your reminder to get your iron checked regularly.

It's estimated that 30% + of women worldwide are within anaemic ranges of iron, and endurance athletes being at a far higher risk. It's not always just fatigue and stress 🙂

Fun anatomy fact 🦴🧠
The palmaris longus muscle; you may have one, two or none! This forearm muscle is found in lots of primates 🐒 and serves the function of pinching the thumb and fifth fingers together and flexing the wrist. As you can see I have it on the left but not the right!

It's believed to have become vestigial in humans as we developed thenar (thumb) muscles through evolution but it seems to have stuck around in some people.

Fun palmaris longus facts:
• more likely to be absent in women than men.
• it's often used in tendon grafts as it has a long tendon and doesn't cause any loss of function
• it can run through the carpal tunnel in some people and pre dispose them to carpal tunnel syndrome

You can check whether you have one or none by pinching your fingers together and flexing the wrist ✋️

I'm a little early on Endometriosis Awareness Month (March!) But it's important enough of a topic to talk about every month 🌸 Impacting 1/10 women, endo is a painful and debilitating reality for many.

Often concomitant with pelvic and low back pain, it's an important part of the puzzle that we solve in clinic 🧩
