Ultra-Processed Foods & Brain Health šŸŸšŸ§

A growing body of evidence links a high intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) to serious brain and mental health issues like cognitive decline, dementia, and mood disorders. Why? UPFs are packed with sugars, additives, and unhealthy fats, but lack fiber and protective nutrients. They disrupt the gut-brain axis, trigger inflammation, and even cause epigenetic changes that may impact future generations.

Let’s rethink what’s on our plates—your brain will thank you. šŸ’”šŸ„¦

A body of evidence indicates an association between ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) and health outcomes. Most of it has been obtained through preclinical studies, although a number of observational studies substantiate how a high intake of these products increases the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders,...

This is just such a wonderful article that highlights the impact that the modern diet is having on our health. I highly recommend taking a read :)

Incomplete understanding of the multiple mechanisms underlying the link between ultra-processed foods and cardiometabolic health should not be an excuse for inaction argue Mathilde Touvier and colleagues The effect of diet on health has historically been considered from a nutrient based perspective....

It was a pleasure to attend this year’s National Parkinson’s Conference and meet one of my greatest inspirations in the field of Parkinson’s disease—Dr. Laurie Mischley. If you or someone you care about is living with PD and haven’t explored her work yet, I highly recommend it.

Parkinson’s disease management is a true passion of mine, and much of my clinical approach is informed by Dr. Mischley’s research. Naturopathic and integrative medicine offer powerful tools in the realm of neurology, and as evidence continues to grow, so does our ability to improve the health span and quality of life for those affected by this condition.

If you are feeling unwell and not getting answers, have you ever considered Stealth Pathogens? Standard pathology screening will not expose these as the cause of illness, although it may offer hints if the practitioner knows what they are looking for.

Stealth pathogens are microorganisms—like bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites—that can evade the immune system and persist in the body long-term, often without causing overt symptoms initially. These pathogens are frequently associated with chronic infections, autoimmune conditions, and neuroinflammatory diseases.

Common Hiding Places of Stealth Pathogens:
1. Biofilms
Complex communities of microbes surrounded by a protective matrix.
It makes pathogens up to 1,000 times more resistant to antibiotics and immune attacks.
Common in sinuses, gut lining, urogenital tract, and implants.

2. Inside Cells (Intracellular)
Some pathogens hide inside host cells, particularly immune cells like macrophages.

Examples include:
Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Borrelia, Bartonella, Brucella, Ehrlichia, Rickettsia and viruses like Epstein-Barr (EBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Herpesviruses

3. Lymphatic System & Spleen
Reservoirs for immune cells and immune surveillance.
Pathogens can persist in lymph nodes, evading systemic detection.

4. Central Nervous System (CNS)
Protected by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which limits immune cell access.
Stealth pathogens like Lyme (Borrelia) or HHV-6 can persist here, contributing to neurodegenerative symptoms.

5. Bone Marrow
Site of immune cell development but also a sanctuary for latent infections (e.g., EBV).

6. Connective Tissue & Joints
Low immune surveillance and oxygen levels create the refuge.
Relevant in stealth infections like Borrelia (Lyme), which is associated with joint and connective tissue symptoms.

7. Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT)
A major immune center where gut pathogens can persist and influence systemic immunity.
Chronic dysbiosis can lead to stealth overgrowths (e.g., Klebsiella, Mycoplasma).

How good is Asian cuisine! Love a heat filled fresh and herby meal. One of my favourite hobbies is going to the market, cooking and eating 🤤 funny how over the summer I am naturally drawn to eating more chilli, whether in a Vietnamese inspired noodle salad, Sri Lankan coconut fish curry, beef rendang or a Isaan wild mushroom salad; fragrant, delicious diversity! I really enjoy the process of cooking from a recipe; the left and right brain cooperating

I have been trying to make my way here since opened 😊 So so glad to get here after a surf and break fast with this bowl! Take away food at its all time best! Multiple fermented ingredients, diversity, lots of fibre and so much FLAVOUR! There must be upward of 30ish different plants in there šŸ˜‰šŸ™ Highly recommend 🌿 a delicious set of kombuchas too!

As a clinician, I’ve learned that my patients are my greatest teachers. This message is simply to say thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your health over the past year—it is truly a privilege and an honor.

A significant part of my approach to lasting healthcare involves rewiring the brain, practicing mindfulness, and fostering gratitude for the blessings we already have. These practices remind us of the incredible power we all possess to create new realities. Even when life hands us challenges, it’s empowering to know we can shape our experiences and guide our futures with intention and care.

As we step into the New Year, I encourage you to reflect deeply on what you want to bring forward into your life—and what you may choose to let go of. This is a time for exploring possibilities, dreaming big, and committing to change. Take a moment to contribute to the collective consciousness: put pen to paper, set your intentions, and ride this wave of momentum.

That said, being happy and content with where you are right now is just as valid and deserves celebration. To those who may be struggling during this time, please remember that things can and will improve, and you are deeply loved. Life is filled with contrasts—light and dark, growth and stillness—but at its core, I believe love is ever-present. It’s up to us to uncover it and let it guide us.

Thank you again for allowing me to be part of your journey. Here’s to health, growth, and abundance in the year ahead.

With gratitude and love,

Davey.

Prioritising good quality wholefoods and home cooking. Eating more plants nuts, seeds, SPICES and grains really works for me 🌿 Providing the body with not just the nutrients locked within these foods but also the vital force, the light energy, the transferred photons from sun, to plant, to me 😊 I’ve enjoyed eating more ghee, yoghurt, hummus, bone broth and salmon this year and my love for sweet potato has persisted.

This is quite a helpful article and a proposed approach to clearing the virus in individuals experiencing long-term COVID-19 symptoms. As the article outlines, the persistent symptoms linked to infection and vaccination are varied and complex. If you are struggling with any ongoing issues, contact a practitioner.

The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 has been found to exhibit pathogenic characteristics and be a possible cause of post-acute sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 vaccines utilize a modified, stabilized prefusion spike protein that may share similar toxic effects with i...

Here’s a quick overview;

The Growing Impact of Prescription Medications on Nutrient Deficiencies

Prescription medication use continues to rise globally. In Australia alone, 335.8 million prescriptions were issued to 17.8 million patients in 2022-23, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year. While medications play a vital role in managing acute and chronic conditions, long-term use can impair nutrient absorption, alter metabolism, or increase nutrient excretion, potentially leading to deficiencies.

Key Medications and Nutrient Depletions

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
Used widely to manage conditions like gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and peptic ulcers, PPIs reduce gastric acid by inhibiting proton pumps in stomach cells. While effective, this suppression of gastric acid can impair the absorption of magnesium, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, vitamin C, and zinc. Chronic PPI use has been linked to hypomagnesemia, which can cause fatigue, muscle spasms, and heart rhythm disturbances. Magnesium supplementation may help, though deficiencies can recur with continued PPI use.

Statins
As the leading treatment for cardiovascular disease (CVD), statins are the most prescribed medications in Australia. However, they inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol production and CoQ10 synthesis—a critical antioxidant for heart health. Studies show statins can lower CoQ10 levels by 16-54%, posing risks to CVD patients. Additionally, statins may deplete L-carnitine, further impacting health.

Conclusion

Long-term use of medications like PPIs and statins can lead to significant nutrient deficiencies, often developing gradually over time. Healthcare providers should monitor nutrient levels in at-risk patients and consider supplementation to mitigate deficiencies and support overall health.

Use of prescription medications continues to grow around the globe.1 In Australia in 2022-23, 335.8 million prescriptions were provided to 17.8 million patients, an increase of 3.9% on 2021-22.2
