Join Simon from Mindful Men and Gabbey from Hope and Healing for an informative and interactive day as we explore mental health/psychosocial disability and the NDIS. We will delve into everything from access (or adding a disability), to writing progress reports. We will talk through planning meetings and get to hear from the perspective of an NDIA planner. We will be providing tools, tips and tricks for navigating all stages of the NDIS process. We aim to further develop people’s understanding around the provision of capacity building supports in relation to psychosocial disability through exploring use of language, therapeutic interventions appropriate for the NDIS space, what sits under the responsibility of the NDIS vs the responsibility of Medicare, and so much more.
This is all done in a small group setting of no more than 15 attendees to ensure that the day can be interactive, informative, fun and engaging. If you work in or around the NDIS and want to understand it a little better, this is an excellent workshop for you to attend.
Registrations close on the 10th of October 2023.
This will be the last chance to attend this workshop in 2023

Excited to share that I have teamed up with a fellow social work colleague, Simon from Mindful Men, to create and deliver some training for people working in the NDIS space to help them better understand and navigate the NDIS system, specifically in relation to people accessing NDIS for a Psychosocial Disability.

There has been significant tension between NDIS and Medicare over the last few years, specifically when it comes to mental health and understanding "who does what" and "what fits where". So we will unpack this and more as part of this one day interactive workshop.

Participants in the workshop will leave with a greater understanding of mental health and the NDIS including access, planning, language, reporting and capacity building therapy for people with a mental health condition.

If you are interested in attending you can register via Eventbrite or feel free to share the link with people you know who might be interested in attending! This is an in person event, held at my office, Hope and Healing Social Work and Counselling, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

Recently I got to join Simon on his .men.aus Podcast to talk a bit about myself, my journey into social work and how losing Ky to su***de both impacted on me and lead to the formation of the campaign.

It's a good conversation that further helps to break down the silence surrounding grief, mental health and su***de.

You can watch or listen by searching for "Mindful Men" on YouTube or your favourite Podcast platform.

For those who aren't aware, Take Your Pineapples Out is part of Hope and Healing Social Work and Counselling.

I've been a little quiet with the campaign over the last 18 months while I took a little breather to regroup and decide where to go next. I'm incredibly passionate about su***de prevention and awareness as it's had such a profound and life altering impact on me and my world. So I'm ready to embrace this new style of video-content social media to get things back up and running again, to prevent further su***des and to break down the silence and stigma surrounding this topic.

If you haven't already, head on over and follow Take Your Pineapples Out on Instagram or Facebook πŸ’›πŸ

25/08 UPDATE: I am now at capacity, will advise when I am able to take new referrals again.
. . . . . . . . . . . .

I have some capacity at present to open up to new clients.

Having been doing this role for almost four years now I have learnt that I don't know everything, in fact far from it... I have soooooo much more to learn and will never stop needing to learn more! So, because of this, I don't 'accept' every new referral or new client because I realise my own limitations in the therapeutic space, and now clearly understand my own knowledge, expertise and skillset and I know that it isn't the right skillset for everyone's needs.

So opening up space for new client's it is not 'first in best dressed,' it's about making sure I am the right person for someone's needs to get the most out of therapy, and it is also about making sure that they feel safe with me.

The next things to consider is my availability. I am only in the office Monday to Wednesday and there are times that are fully booked, for example 8:30am is the most popular time and not available at all, the only after school time I have is 3:30pm and that is often one of the most popular too. So I've also come to realise even when I might be the 'right fit' for someone, our diaries won't always be the right fit for each other.

I am also still not accepting new clients under Medicare, I will continue to work with current or past clients under this method but I am not opening up to new clients in this space. So I am open to new referrals under DVA, Workcover, NDIS, Private Therapy and Clinical/Professional Supervision.

To find out my availability and if I am the right person for you, don't hesitate to email me via gabbey @ hopeandhealing.com.au (intentionally spaced out to avoid spam). This is the best method of communication as I am hard to catch on the phone.

Please note, I only check and respond to emails during business hours.

As Hope and Healing Social Work and Counselling is currently 'Closed to New Referrals' I thought I might just explain what this means.

This means that I, Gabbey, am not accepting new clients that I haven't worked with previously. As I've nearly been operating at Hope and Healing for 4 years, during that time I have worked with many amazing individuals. I have a huge belief in continuity of care and people not having to 'tell their story' over and over again with someone new, unless, of course, they want to start fresh or want someone with a different skillset to myself.

As such, when I have a therapeutic relationship already established with someone, even if they haven't accessed Hope and Healing in recent months or years, even if I am 'closed to new referrals', I will always prioritise past clients who want to reengage with counselling where capacity and scheduling allows.

This might mean waiting until availability arises, in which case people then have the choice if they would like to find someone else. But if you are a past client and you want to reengage with Hope and Healing please don't hesitate to call, text, or email me to see my current capacity and availability, even when I say I am "Closed to new referrals".

Why the Crane?

You might be wondering why I have chosen to use the Origami Crane as a symbol for a mental health service. This is a symbol that has always meant a lot to me. The Origami Crane is part of traditional Japanese culture and it symbolises peace, recovery during ill health and good luck. In more recent years the origami crane has become a symbol of resilience and hope and healing during challenging times. In Traditional Japanese Culture it is believed that if you make 1000 origami cranes you will be granted a wish.
