The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ out-of-date prescribed burn program in WA's South West is having a devastating impact on vulnerable ecosystems and threatened species, while simultaneously ignoring evidence that in reality, it is increasing the flammability of some ecosystems and the risk of intense wildfire.

We're calling on the WA government to instead adopt and fund new early detection and rapid suppression technology to extinguish bushfires quickly, place a moratorium on long unburnt, fire-intolerant and fire-sensitive species and communities, and abandon the current policy of igniting 200,000 hectares per year in southwest WA.

The power of thoughts to heal is substantial and this book ( all of it's many chapters free on You Tube! ) describes in chapter one how full- on physical disease states like cansser can arise from a traumatic event not properly processed. While Im at it here is our milking set up. Wood added here, there and everywhere. Originally made too wide for our smaller cows, add wood. Cow tried to jump out over top....add wood. Cow tries to crawl out under ....add wood. Cow kicks to buggery ....add metal bracing and joiners .

Like lots around here, the milking yard has organically evolved. We only have time to work on it now and again. A side entrance people gate was required and I think it may be over kill but embodies the principle Stew has finally embraced "Do it once. do it right" . This is a guy who fells the spotted gums I planted 35 years ago and creates gate frame, and welds together some broken gates to create a bull proof one. Spotted gum is supposed to be termite and rot resistant, but so is Jarrah (and my house has been attacked a few times but that's another post). Corymbia Maculata ( spotted gum) is way faster growing than Jarrah . Stew used a spotted gum as a power pole years ago and we were gutted to see it buggered within a year. But recently I read that the sap wood should be taken off before putting in the ground. So with renewed interest in the spotted gum plantation we are trying this out. Trouble is the trees have grown massive before their sapwood to strong heart wood ratio is reasonable. Young trees have a LOT of sap wood. Thanks to Lee for help rendered on the yards.

Well its all happening. Goldy the cow and Jasmine the heifer have given birth to a female calf each. You can see the proud father in the back ground. They have intense maternal instincts, greatly loving their calves . They will be together 24 /7 for a few weeks or a month, then calf will be locked up at night. Training them to be milked by hand and then machine has been quite difficult although Goldy who calved first (and had ORANGE colostrum) has settled down to calmly being milked by machine. Jasmine only calved on Saturday and so far it is a bit of a nightmare. She has a very tight hard udder and tiny teats that are widely spaced. She only has to kick a little and the whole claw falls off. Getting the cups to suck on needs 2 of us putting our heads near the kicking action each time then holding them up there. She is using every trick ( poohing , weeing, flicking her tail in our faces repeatedly, and kicking.) Milking by hand is difficult with the small teats ( they will grow ) and the ace up her sleeve is to hold the milk back so you are getting nothing but a dribble. Stew and I are a good team at this but this gal is the most difficult we have encountered in many decades. We fetched the calf and placed her in front of Mum to get the milk flowing again by hand ... until we thought we would try the machine again...pooh everywhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

Spewing, I threw some grass into the pigs and accidentally threw Stewarts shirt in too. It could have been worse, Jennah threw her mobile phone into the pigpen. Anyway I neglected to mention the incident until the following day and this is what was left of a green and yellow shirt like the one he is wearing . Jennah had to get a new phone.

Been having some wonderful days in the garden. Winter is giving way to Spring. Here is the bare poplar in late afternoon light.
