MooGooers may remember that many months ago we voluntarily disposed of almost a tonne of Zinc and an entire batch of sunscreen because it didn’t achieve the SPF result we required (pictured), even though it still tested higher than several of the brands recently reviewed by Choice.
With all the sunscreen news circulating (and even reaching the UK!), we’ve had a lot of questions. Without adding to the controversy, here’s what you need to know about ours.
Our sunscreen carries an SPF 40 claim because SPF 44 was the most genuine result we could achieve using only clear Zinc. While our formula is thicker and contains more Zinc than many products that claim SPF 50, we chose to be transparent and label it SPF 40. The original testing was done through Eurofins Australia, the same highly regarded lab used by Choice, which returned an SPF of 42. We’ve also re-tested through other labs, most recently on 25 March last year, which confirmed SPF 40. A couple of years ago we re-tested a sunscreen after 2 years and it was SPF 38.
Unlike some sunscreens that are hybrids of Zinc and chemical UV filters, we only use Zinc Oxide. No UV filters, no pe*******on enhancers. Our sunscreen is also not made from the common base formula that has been in the news; it’s our own formula, developed in partnership with our therapeutic product manufacturer, and unique to MooGoo (as far as we know).
We do apologise that our sunscreen is a little thicker and takes a couple of extra minutes to rub in clear. But for us, genuine protection matters more than skin feel. We’re confident that our sunscreen provides a high level of reliable sun protection, which is always our top priority.
As with any sunscreen, it needs to be applied generously and reapplied regularly, especially after swimming or if rubbed off by clothing. Our testing showed moderate water resistance after 30 minutes, but we always recommend reapplying after water exposure.
Thanks to everyone who has reached out with questions. We’ll always choose honesty and safety over shortcuts!
