A concussion is a temporary disturbance in brain function caused by a blow to the head or body - that transmits a force to the brain.

According to the AIS and Sports Medicine Australia, concussions affect:
πŸ₯Ί how you feel
πŸ€” how you think
πŸ₯΄ how you move
🀯 how you behave

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ You do NOT need to lose consciousness to have a concussion.
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ You do NOT need a visible injury on you or on imaging (CT, MRI).
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Symptoms may appear immediately or develop over minutes, hours or days.

What are the symptoms that mean I may have a concussion?

πŸŸ₯ Physical Symptoms
Headache
Feeling pressure in the head

Blurred or double vision
Balance problems
Nausea
Sensitivity to light or noise
Feeling slowed down
Neck pain

πŸŸ₯ Cognitive (Thinking) Symptoms
Feeling β€œfoggy” or not yourself

Trouble remembering
Confusion or delayed responses
Feeling dazed

πŸŸ₯ Emotional Symptoms

What To Do If You Suspect a Concussion - AIS Concussion in Sport Guidelines:

1️⃣ Remove from play immediately
> No return to sport, training, school sport or physical activity on the same day. Stop immediately.

2️⃣ Medical assessment
> Assessment should be from a GP, sports doctor, or physiotherapist with training in concussion management.

3️⃣ Follow a graded return (school, work, and sport)
> Australia uses a 6-stage return-to-sport and return-to-learn framework.
> Progression must be symptom-free at each stage.

4️⃣ Only return to sport after medical clearance
> This is non-negotiable under Australian guidelines.

πŸ€“ HOW CAN PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP?
- Balance testing
- Neck assessment (often overlooked but crucial)
- Symptom-guided recovery planning
- Graded return-to-school / sport programs
