Is Your Child’s Back Pack Too Heavy?

Backpack Fitment is really important on the development of growing spines!

Make sure that you child is only putting in their bag what they need for the day.
Where possible only use a daypack that fits them.
Make sure that the straps are set so that the pack rests easily behind the shoulders and is NOT hanging off their back.

Make sure that your child is aware of the consequences of carrying a pack on one shoulder.
Common consequences are: Back pain and changes in shape of a growing spine.

Free Balance Testing During April.

In April every year, the NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Aging Network runs a Falls Awareness Campaign called ‘April Falls’ and in solidarity with them, we run free Balance Assessments using our Posturographic Platform.

We use a posturographic platform to measure very quickly and very accurately how stable you are, and your particular postural characteristics which is helpful in the prevention of, and treatment of back pain.

The benefit of a Balance Assessment is:

- Establishing a Baseline of exactly how stable you are for future reference.
- Early detection of falls risk and instability.
- Having a clear understanding of your postural character and how to improve it in the long term.
- Having a better understanding of how posture works, so that you can make more informed postural choices in the future.

We recommend all women over 55 and all men over 60 have a balance test once a year for early detection of stability.

Click the 'Contact Us' Button above to book your test.

Posture Tip #2 keep your weight in your heels.

Heels are made for weight bearing!

Animals with four legs have paws and hooves so their weight bear evenly between all four of them. Humans have feet. The heel does the job of paws and hooves, the front part of our foot has developed to control our balance and generate movement.

When we weight bear on our heels, we naturally fire the small muscles in our spine which hold the spine stable, when we learn onto our toes these supporting muscles turn off in preparation for movement.

So the back part of our feet creates stability, whilst the front part generates mobility.

If we weight bear on the front part of our foot whilst trying to stand still, we stress the arch and in the long term create foot pain, lower leg pain, hamstring and lower back stiffness.

Standing on your heels is ultimately about BALANCE. If your toes are coming up off the ground, you’ve gone too far!

ALWAYS take care with your balance and make sure that you have something to hang onto when practicing.

Spend today practicing standing on your heels and feel your deep abdominal muscles and spinal muscles hold you up straight.

Posture Tip #1 Bring Everything In Towards You.

Human beings are monkeys with bigger brains!
Instead of four paws, we have two hands and two feet. An animal with four paws will lean forwards towards his food on his haunches while keeping his spine straight. Monkeys are able to manipulate their world with their hands. They sit up straight and bring their food towards them.

When you bring everything in towards you, whether sitting or standing you automatically fire the small muscles between each vertebra that hold your spine stable. When you lean forwards these muscles turn off.

So when standing at a workstation, sitting at your desk, bathing a baby or preparing a meal, ALWAYS orientate yourself so that you are able to bring your work towards you, rather that leaning in towards it.

Spend today thinking about how you can orientate yourself better so that you don’t have to lean into your work.

https://osteopathiccentre.com.au/the-posture-balance-connection/

Most of our patients seek us out because they wish to move freely without pain, and they have tried several different approaches without lasting results.
At Beaches Osteopathic Centre our passion is the restoration of movement through what we call, ‘The Posture-Balance Connection’.

The Posture-Balance Connection is our Education, Coaching and Rehabilitation framework for helping people with problems of spinal pain, mobility, and balance.

It’s based on four Principles.

1. To be stable and mobile we must be able to shift our weight efficiently.
Every step that we take, and every movement that we make is a delicate balance between our ability to create momentum, and our ability to maintain ourselves upright, which is determined by the efficiency with which we shift our weight.

2. “When we lose the ability to weight-shift efficiency our posture deteriorates. This results in:
Stiffness >> Pain >> Loss of Stability >> Loss of Mobility”

3. “For rehabilitation to be effective, we must be ABLE TO MEASURE weight-shifting efficiency.”
Measuring balance and movement efficiency is the cornerstone of what we do.

4. “For us to maintain ourselves upright and move efficiently without pain, we must UNDERSTAND what weight-shifting is, and have the TOOLS, SKILLS and FITNESS to control it effectively.”

We provide online video education and coaching on postural control, and rehabilitation for spinal pain, balance and mobility problems through our Posture-Balance Connection framework.
