This Birth Trauma Awareness Week, we’re turning the focus to something too often left out of perinatal conversations: Postnatal PTSD. 🍼

Birth is not always a joyful or empowering experience. For some, it’s traumatic. It can be both physical or psychological, or a combination of both.

Postnatal PTSD can affect women, birthing people, fathers and partners. And it doesn’t always look like what you’d expect.

You might be:
- Reliving parts of the birth unexpectedly
- Avoiding people, places or anything associated with the birth
- Feeling on edge or emotionally numb
- Struggling to bond with your baby
- Feeling shame that your experience doesn’t match what others describe

Worry has a way of hijacking your whole day, even when nothing’s actually happening right now.🧠

One evidence-based strategy we often share with clients is called “Postpone Worry”. ⏰It doesn’t mean ignore it or push it away. It means creating boundaries around it so it doesn’t take over everything else.

If your brain tends to spiral the moment things go quiet, this one’s worth trying.

Looking for some personalised support, immediate appointments are available with our clinical psychologists, Dr Henry Austin and Rosie Moss.

It’s 3am and your mind’s doing laps again. 🛏️

You’ve tried the herbal teas, the screen rules, the sleep podcasts, but nothing sticks.

The truth is, sleep struggles often run deeper than routine.
Our Clinical Psychologists, Henry and Rosie, work with clients every day to untangle the stress, habits and thought patterns that keep rest out of reach.

For some, it’s underlying anxiety. For others, it’s mental load, grief, burnout, or a cycle they can’t seem to break.

At Canopy, we use evidence-based approaches like CBT-I, mindfulness and behavioural interventions to support better sleep in a way that’s completely tailored to you.

If you struggle with your sleep, get in touch with our team to schedule an appointment. Email hello@canopypsych.com.au or visit canopypsych.com.au.

Men’s Health Week is a reminder that mental health is part of the picture.🧠

Too often, men feel the pressure to stay silent, to push through, keep it together, or carry on without support.

But mental health challenges don’t go away by being ignored.
Depression, anxiety, burnout… they can affect anyone. And seeking help isn’t weakness, it’s the first step toward real change.

This week, we’re sharing the words of men who’ve spoken out, public figures who’ve reminded us that vulnerability is human and it’s so important to seek out help. That is in fact, a real strength.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, we’re here.

👉It might look like kindness or being easy-going on the surface… but often, people pleasing stems from deeper emotional patterns. These could include:

🍃A need for approval
🍃Fear of rejection or conflict
🍃Coping strategies from childhood
🍃Anxiety around setting boundaries

If you find yourself saying yes when you want to say no, or avoiding conflict at all costs, you’re not alone.

Understanding where people-pleasing comes from is often the first step toward healthier and more fulfilling relationships, whether that’s in your personal or professional life.

At Canopy, we offer evidence-based therapy that supports self-worth and assertiveness. We can examine some of the early-life experiences that may have shaped these patterns and a path forward to building long-term resilience.

Some memories don’t fade.
They stay sharp.🧠
Your heart races. 🫀Your stomach drops.
You know you’re safe now, but your body doesn’t believe you.

If that sounds familiar, EMDR therapy might help.

👉EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It’s a structured therapy that helps your brain reprocess difficult memories using guided eye movements or other forms of gentle, rhythmic stimulation. 👀

The goal isn’t to forget what happened, but to reduce the emotional charge that comes with it, so those memories stop impacting your present.

It’s often used to support people through trauma and PTSD, but EMDR can also help with anxiety, panic, phobias, grief, and even chronic pain.

At Canopy, Dr Henry Austin is trained in EMDR therapy and offers this in a safe, supportive space. If you’ve tried talking about things but still feel stuck, EMDR might be worth exploring.

🗓️Henry is currently taking new clients. Email our team at hello@canopypsych.com.au or schedule a session online now.

April is Stress Awareness Month.🧠

But stress doesn’t always feel like stress…

👉It can look like cancelling plans, forgetting what you walked into the room for, feeling weirdly emotional over small things, or nothing at all. It builds quietly, until your baseline becomes tension, tiredness, and a constant feeling of “just needing to get through the week.”

If any of that feels familiar, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to wait for a crisis to get support.🍃

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists work with you to understand what your stress is really saying, what it’s protecting, where it’s coming from, and how it’s showing up in your day-to-day life.

We don’t just offer coping strategies, we help you get to the root of things and work with your nervous system, not against it.

If you think you may be struggling with stress, we’d love to help you through this. Our team is currently available at our Nedlands and Murdoch locations.📍

Have you seen the Instagram/TikTok trend where people imagine meeting their younger selves for coffee?☕️

It’s creatively moving, and surprisingly aligned with what we do in therapy.

👉In clinical practice, we often engage with these ‘younger parts’ of the self, not just as memories, but as emotionally significant representations of formative experiences.

Approaches like schema therapy, parts work (IFS), and inner child work help us give voice to these parts, understand the roles they’ve played, and begin to respond with curiosity and compassion rather than avoidance or shame.

If this trend stirred something in you, perhaps an ache, a sense of recognition, or a desire for deeper healing, therapy can offer a space to gently explore that.

Beyond the symbolism lies real, evidence-based work that supports emotional integration and healing.🍃

What is ‘Enmeshment’ in relationships?🪢

In healthy relationships, there’s a balance between closeness and independence. Enmeshment happens when that balance is lost, when personal boundaries become blurred, emotions are overly intertwined, and individuality is compromised.

This can look like:
👉feeling responsible for someone else’s emotions
👉struggling to make decisions without their input
👉guilt or anxiety when setting boundaries
👉a lack of personal identity outside the relationship

Enmeshment can happen in families, romantic relationships, and friendships. While closeness is important, it’s equally important to maintain a sense of self.

If this resonates with you, therapy can help untangle the patterns and rebuild healthy boundaries. Email us at hello@canopypsych.com.au or book online at canopypsych.com.au.
