The Mental Health Unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital recently enjoyed a festive visit from Bob the therapy dog, where he was treated to festive dog biscuits lovingly prepared by staff and consumers on the ward.

Our Occupational Therapy team work closely with Bob, an accredited assistance animal and his handler Marian, as a key part of their ongoing therapeutic practice.

Bob generally visits the wards fortnightly, providing therapeutic companionship for both staff and consumers.

Senior Occupational Therapist Kylie Horner highlighted the positive effects Bob has had on the ward.

โ€œIt was a pleasure to see our patientโ€™s enthusiasm as they prepared the dog biscuits for Bob," she said.

โ€œHe brings joy to everyone he encounters and encourages socialisation amongst our patients.โ€

Our end of year Christmas functions were recently held across our sites over the past few weeks ๐ŸŽ„

Members of our Board and senior leadership handed out icy poles for staff to enjoy and food platters were provided to our night shift teams, as part of the celebrations.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) patient Keith recently became the first patient in Western Australia to receive phage therapy in a patientโ€™s home, reflecting a growing focus to provide high quality care in the home setting.

Keith originally received his first round of two-week intravenous course of phage therapy back in 2024 to treat an aortic graft, which resulted in him being infection free for eight months.

He has now had his second round of phage therapy, which he has received as an outpatient, in both our SCGH HomeLink clinic as well as his own home.

The joint effort between the SCGH Home Link, Pharmacy and Infectious diseases teams has resulted in new and cutting-edge methods of delivery and unlocked a range of possibilities for the future.

The walls and corridors of our hospitals are looking more like Hollywood blockbuster movies as our teams spread Christmas joy as part of our annual Christmas decorating competition (Deck the Wards).
This is no ordinary competition, teams bring out their most creative minds to create some extra sparkle for patients, visitors and staff this festive season.
A variety of themes were covered this year, from Alice in Wonderland to an Aussie summer Christmas and a Pawfect Christmas.
Judges had the difficult task of selecting winners with such high-quality and creative entries.
A special thanks to our Deck the Wards sponsors: The Good Grocer P&N Bank Paywise Medibank Miss Maud Perth and Santis Cafe Nedlands.

Well done to all those involved and thank you for spreading some Christmas cheer. ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…โ›„

Our Osborne Park perioperative and surgical teams' skills were on full display when they recently participated in their inaugural sustainable fashion parade (Project Runway).

Our clever teams walked the catwalk showcasing left-over materials, as they were tasked with only featuring outfits made of items headed for the recycling bin, landfill or were expired.

The talent on show was incredible and congratulations to everyone involved. The outfits and enthusiasm were simply amazing. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

With a number of mental health nursing opportunities currently available across our inpatient units and community services, Daisy, a member of our Nursing Relief Unit, shares why she loves working with us:

โ€œHaving been with the nursing relief unit for more than five years, I can truly say it was the best professional decision I made. Exposure to all inpatient sites was a great way to learn and develop my nursing skills with many different perspectives. The best skill the NRU has given me is adaptability in different working environments, working alongside many different people.

"The management team supported me to become an advanced skilled enrolled nurse and later supported me through my registered nursing degree. They truly encourage professional development and offer a range of different working opportunities to meet the service needs. If you're considering joining I would 100% recommend!โ€
