Shadow health minister and Vasse MLA Libby Mettam has shared her support for doctors who are sounding the alarm about the dangerously busy Bunbury Regional Hospital, warning that tragedy is waiting in the wings” if more isn’t done to help.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath has backed the doctors’ concerns, calling for for more investment in staff and beds. The south west of WA has one of the lowest rates of hospital beds per head of population in the nation, and this situation must not be allowed to continue.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath told The West Australian that Ramsay Health Care's decision to shut 17 of its 20 psychology clinics across the country by the end of August, including two in WA, will push out waitlists and impact already at-capacity hospitals.

It’s hard enough to find a psychologist as it is and now patients who have been seeing psychologists at these clinics could be left stranded. A few weeks is a very short amount of time for transferring potentially some complex and at risk patients’ care.

GPs and pharmacists aren't interchangeable roles. 👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏼‍⚕️🩺

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath told ABC Radio today that, while pharmacists have a very important role to play in our health system, taking GPS out of the picture is dangerous.

If we widen the scope of what pharmacists can do on their own, there's a danger that things can get missed, and patients can fall through the cracks. That's a risk we don't want to see happen.

We're facing a horror flu season, but even a small rise in cases can overload our hospitals.

Alarmingly, WA’s flu vaccine uptake is among the lowest in the country, meaning that we're protected less than ever before.

We can’t afford a repeat of the northern hemisphere’s brutal flu winter. Vaccination now will save lives and keep pressure off our hospitals later.

That's the message from AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath.

WA is experiencing one of the state's worst flu seasons, with more than 13,000 cases reported halfway through July - compared with 15,000 in July 2023.

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath told ABC News that WA's health system is already stretched to its limit. We don't have the capacity to deal with record flu cases as well.

💉Vaccination is a highly effective protection from flu, so the AMA (WA) is asking people to get your flu vax, and stay home when you're sick 🤒🛌

AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke with Paul Cook on ABC Regional WA about the work still required to keep educating our kids about the risks of va**ng, and the need to continue strong enforcement measures around how it's regulated and advertised.

He also offered some interesting ideas on cover songs, which we'll leave to the audience to comment on 🎸🎶🦅

ICYMI, AMA (WA) President Dr Kyle Hoath spoke to The West Australian about the dangers of steroids without a prescription, following a Major Perth drug bust.

Dr Hoath warned people that the dangers of using black market steroids are numerous and profound. Unlike legally prescribed medications, black market steroids are not subject to pharmaceutical regulations or quality control. If in high doses or over years, the damage can be irreversible or fatal.

There's a huge amount of risk - it's just not worth it.

AMA (WA) President, Dr Kyle Hoath, spoke to The West Australian about the system-wide problems in our health system.

“Whether you talk about it as ramping or beds or staffing, or retention of staff, or the efficiency or effectiveness of our services, modernising, using technology, all of those things are trying to address the same problem, which is helping people get care,” he said.

“The government ultimately want the same thing. They want a healthy State. And so do we,” Dr Hoath said.

“We have our ideas on that, they have their ideas on that. I believe we’ll achieve more working together towards those common goals, (but) that doesn’t mean we can’t hold each other to account.”
