From the 1/12/25 the options will broaden in QLD and GPs with an interest in ADHD will be trusted to diagnose and prescribe for adults as well as children when appropriate.

From December 1, specialist general practitioners will have the ability to diagnose adults with ADHD and prescribe medication, in an Australian first.

Does it seem like more adult women than ever are being diagnosed with ADHD? There’s a reason why.

Recent research shows these diagnoses are rising—not because the disorder is new, but because studies and surveys are finally highlighting how ADHD presents in women. Factors include subtle symptoms, decades of underdiagnosis, and social “masking,” while telehealth and awareness campaigns have made it easier for women to seek evaluation.

If focus or motivation have started feeling harder to manage, there are ways to explore what’s driving the change and what might help.
At ADHD Doctors Tasmania, consultations can look at hormonal, lifestyle, and neurodevelopmental factors together to create a realistic plan.

Changes in memory, motivation, or emotional regulation can emerge during midlife for individuals assigned female at birth. These experiences are often linked to biological transitions such as perimenopause and may also overlap with ADHD-related challenges. Both can be understood and effectively managed through a collaborative, evidence-based approach involving appropriate medical and psychological support.

What’s the link between ADHD and emotional sensitivity (rejection-sensitive dysphoria)?

Many adults with ADHD experience intense emotional responses to real or perceived criticism. This “rejection sensitivity” is thought to stem from differences in emotional regulation and dopamine-mediated reward processing.

Can ADHD affect how I interpret body language or tone?

Yes. ADHD can make it harder to pick up on nonverbal cues, leading people to misread facial expressions or tone of voice. This happens because the brain is already managing high cognitive load and may not process subtle social signals efficiently.

Is ADHD something a GP can help with — or do I need a specialist?

Good question.
Many people begin by talking with a GP who has experience in ADHD care. In most cases, a GP can conduct an initial assessment, organise screening, and coordinate referrals when needed.

Psychiatrists or other specialists may become involved if medication or complex management is required, and ongoing care can often continue under a GP’s supervision once the treatment plan is established.
The main thing:
Getting clarity about what’s happening is a useful step toward feeling more in control — whether the underlying issue relates to ADHD, anxiety, hormonal influences, or something else entirely.
