It is this time of year that I enjoy reflecting on the year that has been. For 2024, I am finding myself feeling so thankful for the work I get to do, each day. It is rewarding, for me, in so many ways. I also get the privilege of sitting with such wonderful people in often their most difficult seasons of their life. I get to see a side of people that others never get the chance to see.

To each person whom I have sat with this year, whether you have been new to my practice or have been someone I get to journey with, for perhaps years now; you are to inspiring and valuable. Just as you are. I am in awe of the courage you have, the strength you may not be able to see yet and the willingness to face and embrace the ''clean pain' that therapy is. You may feel that I might hold the answers to life's problems but the answers truly are found within you and the work you do in the therapy room.

Thank you for your grace and understanding when things may not run smoothly, admin wise, at times. Thank you for your willingness to be vulnerable and consider trusting me to join you in your journey!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. See you next year!!!

Please email me of you wish to make bookings for the new year. I will be delayed in replying over the break but will endeavour to reply as soon as I can.

54321 Grounding exercise

Keep your breathing slow and intentional while you slowly look around the room. You are wanting to bring your mind's attention to the present moment. Often the things we worry about are in the past or in the future. Bringing your attention to now is a good way to settle anxious feelings and gather your thoughts into the present moment. This will give your nervous system data that you are indeed safe and connected.

Give it a try now.

Say to yourself, slowly, the below things you notice (and try using your peripheral vision to bring the parasympathetic nervous system on board. It will help even more):

5 things you can see
4 things you feel on your body (feet in your shoes, etc)
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste

Notice how you feel after you have slowly gone through this grounding technique. Do you feel more in your body? Or perhaps more aware of the room you are in? How does your body and mind feel different?

I bought the counselling room a Christmas gift today!! This little fountain is so sweet! What are 3 things you can hear in this short video?

🌧️ Learning to Dance in the Rain 🌈

Life is full of unexpected storms—challenges that leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain. While it’s natural to wish for sunny skies, true growth comes not from waiting for the storm to pass, but from learning how to navigate it with self compassion.

Good mental health hygiene is about taking small, intentional steps to care for ourselves even in the hardest times:
✨ Acknowledging your feelings instead of pushing them aside.
✨ Setting boundaries that protect your energy.
✨ Staying connected to what truly matters to you, even when others may not understand.
✨ Finding joy in the moment, no matter how small it might seem.

If the storm feels too big to face alone, you don’t have to. Talking to someone who understands can make all the difference. Counselling offers a safe space to explore your emotions, strengthen your sense of self, and find new ways to weather life’s challenges.

💡 Imagine what it could feel like to move through the rain with confidence—knowing that you’re not just surviving, but thriving.

You are worthy of support, and you are capable of learning how to dance in your own storm season. 🌟

If this resonates with you, I’m here to help. 🤝

When new clients share that they have been referred to me by someone that I've seen for therapy, it is such a thrill and delight! I am so thankful to get an opportunity to connect with such beautiful and wonderful people each day. It is such a privilege and honour to get to sit with you for therapy.

Thank you for the word of mouth referrals!! They make my day and I appreciate them very much so!

When you are in the depths it can feel so hard and so alone. Therapy can help you feel more connected and less alone while you are in the depths.

Sleep! It is so good when you have enough!

It can be so debilitating when you don't have enough! We should be aiming for 7-9 hours a night. Fun fact: women actually need more sleep than men!

Self esteem takes time to grow. It is hard to grow self esteem while you still have people in your life who do or say harmful things to you. Come to therapy to help you work out how to hold boundaries and start valuing yourself!

Loving others and loving yourself is what life is all about! Loving others well, is not an easy thing to do, but it is much easier if you also love yourself. Can't give from an empty vessel.

Creating a deep friendship takes time and also requires a willingness to be uncomfortable, respectful and honest with yourself and each other. It takes practice... with LOTS of mistakes and chances to repair in between. This is ok because it strengthens your relationship. It is totally worth the risk of rejection and hurt and a sound investment.

I recently bought this book to read with my children!

My children were engaged with the content and also took away a better understanding of their own instincts which is exactly what I wanted! Highly recommend.

This book teaches, in child-freindly language, about consent, listening to your instincts and other important issues like knowing what safe and tricky people look and feel like. Tricky people is an alternative way to talk with your kids about stranger danger.

The author, Crystal Hardstaff, is a colleague of mine and runs a private practice called The Gentle Counsellor. Please check out her book and other resources available on Crystal's website.

“Tricky People” by Crystal Hardstaff is a children’s book covering topics such as consent, body autonomy, and listening to their…

Autism Acceptance Month in April

Why did I choose the word Acceptance and not Awareness? I think the following says it well

"Lyric Holmans, from the NeuroDivergent Rebel blog, explains:

● Autism Awareness is knowing autistic people exist.
● Autistic Acceptance is about embracing them as they are, with strengths and weaknesses.
● Autistic Pride is when autistic individuals feel secure and confident, taking pride in their authentic neurodivergent selves."

Language is really powerful. I have found a really great handbook for neurodivergent affirming language. If you are interested in learning about this more, please check out the link in comments.

Our Story

Rachel Whitton’s counselling approach is warm and non-judgmental. Rachel works from a range of counselling frameworks to ensure she can provide each person with a counselling session that meets their individual needs. She uses predominantly Narrative Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy and is Trauma-informed in her practice. This means Rachel understands the way memories of trauma are stored in the brain and in the body. She works to ensure that you feel safe, listened too and valued so that your sessions can bring healing and closure to the trauma you may have experienced as a child and/or as an adult. She works with you to focus the counselling sessions on the things that matter to you and what you feel you need.

Rachel holds a Master of Counselling and a degree in Behavioural Science (Psychology). Rachel worked in the Child-Protection field for a number of years and enjoyed supporting those who care for children in the Foster Care System. Rachel is a qualified and registered professional counsellor with the following Counselling Membership Associations: Christian Counsellors Association Australia (CCAA) and Psychotherapy and Counsellors Federation of Australia (PACFA).
