Hepatitis A symptoms can be mild or absent in young children. Adults are more likely to have symptoms, which can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light coloured stools, and jaundice (yellow eyes/skin).

Symptoms typically begin two to seven weeks after exposure.

If you develop these symptoms, avoid preparing food for others and see your GP or call Healthdirect (1800 022 222).

Summer is here and the days are heating up! ☀️

Remember, the higher the UV Index, the higher the risk of skin damage - even when it’s cool or cloudy.

Before you head out, check the UV Index. If it’s 3 or above, protect your skin:

- Slip on protective clothing
- Slop on SPF50+ sunscreen every two hours
- Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
- Seek shade
- Slide on sunnies

Planning a trip overseas with the kids this summer holiday?

Make your holiday memorable for all the right reasons.

Have a healthy safe summer holiday with these simple tips:
- Research your destination and any potential health risks.
- Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any recommended travel vaccinations before you go.
- Pack enough medication for your trip (in its original packaging).
- Get travel insurance no matter where you are going.
- If you’re heading somewhere warm, keep mozzies and the diseases they carry away by spraying up with insect repellent and covering up with long loose clothing.
- Monitor for symptoms when you return home. If you or your children are unwell, stay home and avoid contact with others.

This Christmas, we were honoured to welcome a very special visitor back to our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Eight-year-old Aurelia Hall returned to personally deliver a donation she raised through her own fundraising efforts.

Aurelia’s story is a beautiful reminder of the magic of giving. Born at just 27 weeks and weighing only 870 grams, she spent her earliest days in NICU. Today, she’s a vibrant, caring young girl who loves dancing, riding her bike, and the beach and she wanted to give back to the team who helped save her life.

Her mum, Hannah said that Aurelia was so excited to support NICU and help other babies and families. She has such appreciation for the team for looking after her and helping save her life.

The $16 Aurelia raised has been deposited into the NICU account and will contribute directly to the care of babies currently receiving treatment. We are incredibly proud of Aurelia and grateful to her parents, Hannah and Matt, for encouraging such generosity.

Thank you, Aurelia, for inspiring us all. You can help continue sharing the magic of Christmas by donating today 👉 https://ow.ly/xiuj50XN0G6.

Last week, John Hunter Children’s Hospital staff swapped their scrubs for costumes as they took to the stage for this year’s festive pantomime🎄✨

A much-loved tradition, the annual staff pantomime brings music, laughter and festive fun to the hospital each year, with staff singing, dancing and embracing the spirit of the season together.

Thank you to all our excellent staff, who are constantly creating magic moments for our patients!
