This week, we’re celebrating World Music Therapy Week and recognising the incredible work of our registered music therapists.

On Tuesday, the Music Therapy team at John Hunter Children’s Hospital welcomed patients, visitors and staff to experience the power of music therapy firsthand. Through interactive sessions, they highlighted how music supports emotional expression, communication, rehabilitation, sensory regulation, and overall wellbeing.

A big thank you to our music therapists for the creativity and care you bring every day. You help create spaces where patients feel supported, heard and empowered.

Today is World Art Day and to celebrate we hosted an art activity for patients, visitors and staff at John Hunter Children's Hospital.

Art therapy gives children in hospital a safe, creative space to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through art-making, young patients can share emotions that may be hard to put into words - helping to reduce stress, build confidence, and create a sense of control during what can be an overwhelming time.

By encouraging self-expression and emotional exploration, art therapy helps children feel seen, heard, and understood throughout their hospital journey.

Flynn was born with a blockage in his windpipe, requiring an emergency tracheostomy at birth. Specialist teams worked quickly to save his life, before he was transferred from Maitland Hospital to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital NICU where he spent his first few weeks receiving critical care.

Over the years, Flynn has undergone numerous surgeries, showing incredible strength and resilience every step of the way.

Recently, Flynn reached a very special milestone – he had his tracheostomy removed.

“He is such a brave and resilient little boy,” his mum, Taylor, shared.

“He beat the odds when he came into this world, and we know he’s going to do great things.”

Now 7 years old, Flynn is full of personality and curiosity. He loves the outdoors, creepy crawlies and is a big fan of reptiles, especially snakes and lizards.

One of the things he’s most excited about now is finally starting swimming lessons.

When Evie was admitted to John Hunter Children’s Hospital with anorexia nervosa, she was physically fragile and emotionally exhausted. Evie's mum Lisa, shared just how overwhelming those first few days were, including the eight days on bed rest. As parents, they were frightened and unsure of what lay ahead.

In just under four weeks, through the care of the ward staff and Eating Disorder team, Evie regained her strength and reached her goal weight.

“With patience, compassion and unwavering belief in her recovery the teams looking after her, didn’t just help our daughter heal, you restored hope to our whole family. She was treated with dignity on her hardest days. Small milestones were celebrated and we were supported when we felt completely out of our depth. The professionalism and kindness of the team changed the trajectory of her life.”

"We will always be grateful to the team at John Hunter Children’s Hospital for walking beside us during the most difficult chapter of our lives. Your care made all the difference," said Lisa.

NSW Health is advising people to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of a confirmed case who visited locations in Newcastle and Sydney while unknowingly infectious, including a healthcare facility.

The case is a returned traveller who is suspected to have acquired their infection overseas in India, where there are ongoing outbreaks of measles.

A full list of locations is available on the NSW Health website (www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/measles/Pages/public-exposure-locations.aspx).

Exposure locations and times are updated regularly. People who attended these locations should watch for symptoms of measles. These locations do not pose an ongoing risk.

If it has been less than 6 days since the exposure at these locations and you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or have an infant who was exposed, you are advised to contact your local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055.

There is currently an increased risk of measles in NSW, with 42 cases confirmed since 1 January 2026.

Dr David Durrheim, Public Health Physician with Hunter New England Local Health District, said people should monitor for symptoms of measles, particularly if they have visited any of the exposure locations at the listed time.

“Measles is a vaccine preventable disease that is spread through the air when someone who is infectious coughs or sneezes,” Dr Durrheim said.

“Symptoms to watch out for include fever, runny nose, sore eyes and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body.

“It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms for this period."

“If they develop symptoms, they should call ahead to their GP or emergency department to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients.”

For more information on measles, view the measles factsheet: (www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/Measles_Factsheet.aspx.

People can also visit the Australian Government Smart Traveller website (www.smartraveller.gov.au ) for information on health risks, including measles outbreaks relevant to their travel destination.

If you, or a loved one, is experiencing measles symptoms, or have questions about measles, please call your GP or healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

Frankie was born at just 24 weeks in December 2018, alongside her identical twin sister, Daphne. Four days later, their family said goodbye to Daphne, a loss that remains part of their story.

Frankie spent more than three months in hospital, facing challenges no newborn should have to endure. Throughout that time, her family was supported by a dedicated NICU team who showed care, honesty and compassion when it mattered most.

When Frankie finally went home her journey continued with oxygen support and many follow-up appointments. With each milestone, she grew stronger.

Frankie’s mum, Casey, says her daughter is thriving.

"She’s tall, clever, brave and full of personality. She knows she was born tiny, and she knows she is a twin. She often talks about her sister and tells us she misses her. We make sure Daphne’s name is spoken in our home because she will always matter.”

“We are endlessly grateful to the staff at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital who helped bring our daughter home. Frankie’s strength is hers, but it was supported every step of the way by people who showed up for our family when we needed them most.”
