In Ayurveda, winter can aggravate both VATA & KAPHA doshas leading to seemingly opposite imbalances. Vata imbalance creates dryness of the skin & joints, light or disturbed sleep, anxiety & poor digestion. As we get deeper into Winter & it becomes heavier & damper, Kapha begins to accumulate, bringing stagnation, mucus congestion, sluggishness, dullness and emotional heaviness. This is why gentle movement like walking & yoga, keeping warm & covering the ears in the wind, oiling, dry brushing and mindful nourishment are essential at this time of year.
