β˜•πŸ˜‚ Corumbene Meets and Mingles with UTASβ˜•πŸ˜‚

Back in April, University of Tasmania and Derwent Valley Community House teamed up to start Meet & Mingle Thursdays to help foster new friendships, share stories and learn together.

Our Corumbene residents went to one of these lovely meetings in May and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Many of them recognised Danielle, the organiser, from when she worked at Corumbene. Everyone gathered around and drank cups of tea and coffee and munched on scones with cream and jam as they shared stories. Even one of our residents, Sue, who is a nature lover, found a tree stump to pat in the hallway of the Community House. We are hoping this outing will become a regular event for our residents, so we hope to see more people there on Thursdays to foster more chats and smiles.

🀝☺️ Happy National Volunteers Week! 🀝☺️

This past week from May 18 - 24 was . Here at Corumbene, we have a whole group of volunteers that help make every day at our residential facility a better one.

Whether they are helping with the numbers a Bingo, collecting Footy tippings or getting more residents involved in Knit & Chat, our volunteers bring joy and brightness to our community.

To honour our incredible volunteers, our Wellbeing & Lifestyle Coordinator Karen organised a celebratory event to show our appreciation. Our Chief Executive Officer Alison Standen gave a moving speech about the importance of their roles as volunteers and highlighting National Volunteer Week overall. She then proceeded to call up each volunteer individually and speak about their specific contributions to Corumbene and hand them a certificate and gift bag. Afterwards, everyone from residents to staff to volunteers was invited to enjoy some afternoon tea, sandwiches, hot pastries and desserts together.

Some of our volunteers in attendance have been giving their time and energy to our residents for years and some have only just joined our community a week ago. Regardless, we are so thankful for each and every person that helps make our community a better one.

Thank you Volunteers!!

πŸ‘‹ πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈHappy International Nurses Day! Let's Meet One of Our Nursing Services Registered Nurses, Laura πŸ‘‹πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

In honour of , we wanted to showcase our incredible nurses. Meet Laura from Nursing Services 😁

Hello, I’m Laura!

I’m a proud mum of a 2.5-year-old boy and two puppy dogs. Most weekends are spent going on adventures, family time or trying to complete our backyard project.

I’ve been working as a registered nurse for 9 years. The majority of my nursing years have been in anaesthetics and recovery at Hobart Private Hospital before making a change to community-based nursing. I have been working within the Corumbene organisation for just over a year as a registered nurse for the Rural Primary Health Program. Recently, Corumbene has combined services for our Rural Primary Health Program and Community Nursing Services.

My nan used to tell me when I was younger that I would make a good nurse or teacher due to having a good caring trait. I’ve always enjoyed taking care of others and helping to make a difference in others’ lives. I love hearing their stories and learning how they live. I ensure that all clients are involved in their own care to allow the best outcomes for them. Clients can be quite vulnerable and it’s a nice feeling that they trust and can confide in you.

Our Community Nursing Services will only be eligible for Support at Home clients at the moment while we establish the program. Clients can benefit by having access to a nurse, wound care management, medication management, comprehensive assessments and much more. The nursing team will be able to give recommendations to best assist clients with their needs. I hope this can allow clients to stay at home longer and give them the support they need to be able to do that.

I’ve had many great moments with clients over the past year. It’s hard to choose just one. But I enjoy the moments when you’ve set a goal with a client and work with them over the course of the year. I can observe the improvements before the client sees them, but it’s the moment where they notice the change and others have complimented them on their improvement that really resonate with me.

πŸ’Œ A Gentle Guide for Grief for National Palliative Care Week πŸ’Œ

Though it can be difficult to talk about palliative care, it is an important topic to discuss in aged care. That's why we are highlighting National Palliative Care Week, which is this week from 10 - 16 May.

Palliative Care Australia do amazing work all year-round, but for this week they want to help raise awareness so more people can understand and ask questions about palliative and end-of-life care. They've also created a great resource for those who are experiencing grief and how to gently navigate such a difficult time.

πŸ«–πŸ§ Mother's Day Morning Tea with Memories πŸ«–πŸ§

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, and maternal figures in our lives.

Our residents celebrated all the contributions women have had in their lives by hosting a Mother's Day morning tea this past Friday. All the ladies gathered around a long table that had been set up in the Main Lounge. Once everyone was seated, the Wellbeing & Lifestyle team started pouring cups of tea and passing out scones with jam and cream on our nice fine China.

Everyone at the tables enjoyed the treats and started chatting away about their own childhoods and how their mother's influenced them with pieces of advice and stories. One of our Wellbeing & Lifestyle team members, Lucretia, got the conversation going by asking the residents about their own mothers and famous sayings about mum's that they all might know. She had even encouraged the residents to bring photos from their childhoods showing them with their mothers and photos of them with their children and grandchildren to show around.

Towards the end of the morning tea, the Wellbeing & Lifestyle team announced they had 5 lucky door prizes to hand out and the winners would receive a bottle of perfume. Congrats to residents Denise, Sue, Francis, Dot and Kay for winning! One of our residents, Peter, concluded the tea with a lovely speech about the importance of women and mothers which everyone adored.

Each person left the event with a beautiful chrysanthemum. Thank you to everyone for making this such a special day!
